Greetings!

Many of you have visited a while with Huey, Louie and their parents, our little family of red-shouldered hawks.  These beautiful birds have a nest in one of our pine trees, and we've been privileged to watch them, from nest-building to chick-rearing.  With graduation day and hawk-fledging fast upon us, we're thinking about families and how they grow and change. Our babies were born earlier in the spring, and will leave the nest in as few as 6 weeks after hatching.  Your nestlings may now, after years of tender loving care, be ready to leave your nest.  If so, we wish all of you the very best of luck.  And graduates, please accept our heartiest congratulations.  Now get out there and pounce on something!

We haven't only been watching baby hawks.  We've also been busy around here, getting a good summer schedule put together for you!  Take a look at all the new classes coming in June and July!

New Classes!

Wow -- so much going on in June it's hard to know where to begin, so I'm just going to take them in order.

Susie Curry is teaching another mosaic class on June 12.  This time, participants will make a 12" square framed mirror.  This project is larger than the first class project but should be simpler to complete.  As before, class size is limited to 8.  This class is $90 and includes everything you need, plus refreshments!

We are so pleased to announce that Cecilia Campos Merino has agreed to teach a

series  of four classes especially for kids ages 4-10 years.  Each Thursday afternoon, beginning June 9, young artists will create a unique acrylic painting on canvas.  Sign up for one or take the whole series.  These classes are $35 each.  Please note that because the students are so young, we ask that a parent remain at the garden center during the class.  Don't worry -- we'll find you something to do!

Michael Vollmer is teaching a watercolor painting class on Saturday, June 25.  This class is geared toward adults and is 3 hours long.  Participants learn about materials, technique and composition as they create an original 8x10 painting of their own.  This class is $35 and includes all materials and supplies necessary.

Then on Sunday, June 26, Butterfly expert and Master Gardener Barbara Buckley leads a workshop in Butterfly Gardening.  Come learn about butterflies and how to attract them to your garden.  This class is from 2:00-3:00pm and is free.  Fort Bend County Master Gardeners, this class counts toward your Advanced Training requirements.

More to come!  Lisa Bonin is teaching a fused-glass jewelry workshop in July and we hope to offer a rainbarrel-building class soon, too.   That's of course, if it ever rains!

Here's more information on the Watercolor Class, the Mosaic Mirror Class, the Acrylic Painting Class for Kids, and the June 18 Open Air Studio.  Each is a 1-page PDF file, so you might need to download Adobe Acrobat (free) to read it.
Daylilies

Daylily Pandora's Box
Hi, I'm Elizabeth and I'm addicted to daylilies!  I struggle in vain -- the attraction is just too strong.  Daylilies are so easy to grow, and feature such charming flowers, that I'm helpless.  If I had the space, I'd have one of every kind.  My very favorites are the old-fashioned yellow color and the vivid new red ones, but there's a daylily in almost every color except for true blue and pure white.
Daylily Ruby Red

Daylilies are perennials in our area, and can be evergreen, semi-evergreen or dormant, depending on the variety.  I prefer the evergreen ones:  they seem to make it through our wet winters easily and I never forget where I've planted them.  Daylilies need a lot of sun, at least 6 hours per day, and don't seem picky about soil type.  Although they only bloom once, their bloom season is long, making them a valuable addition to the perennial bed.  As plants get larger, they can be dug up and divided.  Then you can share your treasures with your best friends!

Papershell has a variety of daylilies in stock, and because I love them so, they're on sale until June 8!
