Greetings!

I'm reminded this Thanksgiving of the importance in our lives of stories.  Do you remember the old song, "Tell me a story. Tell me a story. Tell me a story, then I'll go to bed"?

The stories I'm thinking of are not "about the birds and bees or how to make a chicken sneeze" but are the stories of our families, of our faith and our freedoms.  All those stories bind us as families of grateful Americans coming together around our Thanksgiving tables.

The message in this newsletter from Rose, one of 912 Super Seniors' directors, describes her family's tradition of sharing stories as they gather at Thanksgiving.  She hopes the stories will strengthen her family in their understanding and love of each other and provide heartening memories for her grandchildren.

And then Duke, a valued contributor to 912 Super Seniors, emailed to me "Our Nation's First Thanksgiving Proclamations" which reflect a story of thanks to God for his mercy and blessings on our early settlers and founders.

Marlene Peterson, vice-President of Homemakers for America, shared with us her thoughts on the importance of reading the stories of America's founders, of their struggles and challenges, with the children we love.  Marlene's work was instrumental in gathering the stories for the Libraries of Hope books available from the www.GardenofLiberty.org

I think we have all been drawn to stories from our parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles and even a patient neighbor who shared a porch swing  along with their childhood memories.  Can you think back to Thanksgiving gatherings when you were a child?  Can you recall those family stories even now if you were to try?

The conversations at Thanksgiving and everytime we gather with our family and friends are wonderful opportunities to share our values and our heritage with those so dear to us. And the example of our experiences and those of our parents and our own grandparents will become part of the remembances and guidance to our children and grandchildren.

Even our adult children are never too old to learn more about their heritage and be influenced by it.  If I were with my parents this Thanksgiving I might ask my Dad about the pocketknife he carries that belonged to his father and then to his oldest brother and now is always in his own pocket.  I know Dad's grandchildren from ten to forty would want to see his pocket knife, open and close it, and hear its history.

I would like to ask my Mom about Thanksgivings when she was a child...who came for dinner and what did her Mother pepare...how did the cousins entertain themselves as they waited to be called to the table and what was expected of Mom and her brothers to help prepare for and entertain their company.

The stories families share can become a rich tapestry of faith in God, pride in country and the security of a family history.

More than anything our grandchildren can learn from the internet, more than the latest game or phone or gadget they want so badly...so much more will they come to cherish the memories of  time and talks with grandparents who love them and care enough to share their very best.

912 Super Seniors, a place to stand together

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday in our family. We get together for every holiday, but Thanksgiving is one for all religions to celebrate together. ROSE HEAD SHOTI was raised Catholic, my husband is Jewish, so you can see why this shared holiday brings us even closer together as all religions thank God for America's blessings.

During dinner we go around the table and everyone tells a story about what they are thankful for. Sometimes it's such a funny story we are laughing our pants off, and then there are stories that bring tears rushing down our cheeks. It's a nice way, now, to show and teach the grandchildren what the holiday is all about.

Yes, we talk about the Pilgrims and America, but to me, it's when we should thank the Lord for the many gifts he has given us. Children need to hear what their parents and grandparents are thankful for so it will sink in and they will know and learn.

It's these special moments together that I pray my grandkids will cherish and remember when I'm gone, the memories of Grandma's loving kisses and Grandpa's big hugs. Oh yes, I will be thankful once again this year for the love I share with my family.

A thought at Thanksgiving

As a landed immigrant from Canada (legal that is!!) who has lived in England as well, I consider myself so blessed to be able to associate with like-minded Americans who exercise their right to make a difference in this country as individuals as opposed to members of a party.

This consideration may seem odd to some of you who take it for granted that you can do so in this country. I find that many Americans do not realize the significance of living in a country that is a Constitutional Republic. Many think that their neighbors to the north are governed by a democratic system that must give them the same kind of individual rights that every American has. Sorry - that is not the case.

Canada, having been a colony of Great Britain and failing to do what those original Tea Party Patriots did in America, is governed under the rule of a monarch - currently the Queen of England. Although she appoints the Governor General to represent her, she retains all executive, legislative and judicial power within and over Canada. The Governor General is permitted to exercise most of this including the Royal Prerogative in the Queen's name with much of this in mostly a ceremonial fashion.

Canada is, like England, a Representative Democracy and that is very different than a Constitutional Republic. A Canadian citizen can vote for only one local representative of any one of many political parties. Which ever party receives the most representatives, the leader of that party becomes the Prime Minister of Canada in a federal election or the Premier of the Province in a provincial election. Also, the party representative receiving the majority of votes locally must govern along party lines, not as an individual if he/she wants to remain in that seat. Very seldom does any elected member vote against their party.

In short, the individual Canadian voter does not have the local muscle to make a representative vote one way or another. In contrast, the American voter has three times the muscle since he/she votes separately for President, Senator and Congressman in a federal election and Governor, Senator and House Rep in a state election. And if enough constituents band together, they can force their local representative to vote against the party line.

So as an American I consider myself very blessed that as an individual American citizen, I have the opportunity to help shape the future of America much more directly than I ever had as a citizen of Canada to shape its future. And it is this time of the year when I reflect back to the actions of our Founding Fathers and to the manner in which they celebrated their freedom by giving thanks at Thanksgiving, that I give thanks for the blessings that I have received as an immigrant to the greatest country in the world. A fact that I shall never forget.

The First Thanksgiving Celebration at Berkeley Plantation

Virginia.org

The first Thanksgiving occurred when Captain John Woodlief led the newly-arrived English colonists to a grassy slope along the James River and instructed them to drop to their knees and pray in thanks for a safe arrival to the New World. It was December 4, 1619, and 38 men from Berkeley Parish in England vowed: "Wee ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually keept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God." You'll find their vow carved on a brick gazebo marking the location believed to be where Woodlief knelt beside the James River.

Continental Congress Thanksgiving Proclamation

By the United States in Congress Assembled, 1782
It being the indispensable duty of all Nations, not only to offer up their supplications to ALMIGHTY GOD, the giver of all good, for his gracious assistance in a time of distress, but also in a solemn and public manner to give him praise for his goodness in general, and especially for great and signal interpositions of his providence in their behalf.

These two proclamations and the others by the governing council of Charlestown,Massachusetts in 1676 and by President George Washington in 1789 are clear and strong in their recognition of Divine Providence in the survival and successes of this new nation.  Each proclamation also calls for a day of prayer and thanksgiving to "acknowledge the providence of Almighty God".

An I-Book: That Is, I Read With You
Stories of the Valor and Virtues of our American Heroes

This year as you consider Christmas gifts for your grandchildren, I hope you'll consider sharing America's story with them the way it used to be told.

A grandmother I know  felt compelled several years ago--when tea parties involved cups and saucers--to start gathering stories from our heritage.   Now, it is becoming more apparent why doing that was so important.  Our grandchildren won't fight to keep their liberty if they don't love their country.  And they won't love their country without the stories of why she is worth loving.

If you were to plant yourself in front of the children's American history section at your local public library and read what's available for our children you may be disappointed.    Aside from the fact that this section is likely very small, many of the stories are about what's wrong with America.  Missing from them are the principles of patriotism, virtue and faith that were beautifully woven into the stories written before 1923.

These stories are available to you in the Freedom Series which can be ordered at gardenofliberty.org.  Each month for the next twelve months, the children in your lives will receive a beautiful hardbound, dust-jacketed volume of these treasured stories to retell, read aloud or read alone.  There is something for every age.

And when you ask them about their favorite story or, better yet, to sit and read one of the stories to you, you will  be making a memory as well as a lasting impression.

Please visit www.gardenofliberty.org to learn more.

Are You Thankful for Glenn Beck?

When you count your blessings, is Glenn Beck among them?

After all, he assures us, he is only an entertainer.

                                                                                           Glenn Beck by Terry Sells

glenn beck from terry sells let my people know

Whether you knew Glenn Beck back when he was only on the radio or first met him on CNN or turned on this kind of crazy 5:00 show on Fox that a friend told you about, you quickly came to know a few things about Glenn.

You were urged to "Question with Boldness" and probably sat with your mouth open as Glenn showed how that is done. The issues and connections he researched and explained were controversial and unexpected to say the least.

When Glenn told us again and again to do our own research and we found that our research confirmed his, you were ready to "Hold to the Truth"  in spite of the contradictions from the media around you.

Then, after assuring a discouraged caller that he was not alone, Glenn envisioned and enabled the 912 Project. Through that project you and millions of Americans stepped forward to "Speak Without Fear".  And in so doing you joined patriotic Americans and stepped out of your home and onto the streets of Washington DC. and beyond.

And now as Glenn has moved to GBTV we learn that not only does he himself do what he urges others to do, but he does it with incredible innovation.

Certainly, the 912 Super Seniors are thankful for Glenn Beck. We support his work, admire his talents and respect his determination to help as many as he can and in any way he can.

We would encourage you to stay connected with Glenn through his GBTV, radio work and special events.

And if you haven't yet seen GBTV on your computer, you will find it easy and amazingly "Glenn".

To watch Glenn expose the OWS, click on:

http://www.glennbeck.com/2011/10/25/the-truth-about-occupy-wall-street-full-episode-for-free/ and you can watch the GBTV episode where Glenn and his chalkboard give us these facts the main stream media will not report

Those of you missing Glenn on Fox can stay closely connected to Glenn, his information and research for no charge. By going to www.GlennBeck.com you can connect with Glenn and his information in two ways. Here you can sign up  for Glenn's free newsletter.  Here also you can click on "Listen Now" and hear live streaming of Glenn's radio show available at anytime.  The radio show airs live weekdays from 9am to noon.

For 9.95/month or 99.95/year you can see all of Glenn's new shows right on your computer as well as any past shows. All his shows are available on demand to fit your schedule. All the details about GBTV can be found at www.GBTV.com and the 14 day free trial is still being offered there.

If you remember Glenn's Czar at Large, Brian Sack, and enjoyed his humor, you'll want to watch an episode from his new show on GBTV.  Brian's show, The BS of A, is already off to a great start as you will see in this episode where Brian is visiting "Pumpernickel Boulevard".

Ohio Citizens Were First to Vote on Obamacare. They voted "NO!"

Many Americans work long hours so that weekends and evenings become precious family time. However, Ohio Tea Party, 912 and other patriots volunteered countless of these valuable hours gathering signatures in all 88 counties of Ohio to force the issue of Obamacare onto their state ballot this November . Where there was a county fair, a town's parade or festival, a church social, the patriots were there filling petitions one citizen, one signature at a time.

They gathered 440,000 signatures. And the resulting ballot Issue #3 passed on Nov. 8 by a resounding vote of 2 to 1. A vote for Issue #3 was a vote against Obamacare. Ohioans were the first Americans who actually got to vote on Obamacare, and they voted NO! The 20 month effort of over 4400 volunteers resulted in every county in the state voting to reject the forced healthcare mandates of PPACA, known as Obamacare.

Ohio's rejection of Obamacare will not go unchallenged since PPACA can have no state allowed to go their own way on healthcare.  All the more then Ohioans have done an historic service to all Americans. They showed us what a determined and organized grassroots effort can accomplish.

In addition, Ohio's volunteers defined a clear narrative for political victory in 2012. Americans may disagree on tax changes and on how to best create jobs, but the Ohio vote shows overwhelming agreement against Obamacare. Politicians who supported it or are not working to repeal it are putting themselves on the wrong side of the voters' mandate.

With Thanksgiving gatherings of family and friends come more chances for us 912 Super Seniors to share the information here with others.  Be sure to have a copy or two of our pamphlet with you at all times to give to friends and discuss with them. Also, Seniors continue to give the pamphlet to doctors, leave copies in waiting rooms, post on bulletin boards, etc.

The healthcare pamphlet which can be printed here and at www.912SuperSeniors.org  continues to provide important alerts about the effects of PPACA (Obamacare).

Now that the Supreme Court will hear arguments to determine the constitutionality of the Obama healthcare law, employers and all Americans are hopeful that Ohio's choice will be the result for all Americans.

Betsy McCaughey, a patient advocate and a constitutional scholar with a Ph.D. in Constitutional History has been a guest on national TV often to give her opinion about the Supreme Court challenge. In the article linked here she predicts a split court with a 5-4 decision against the law's requirement for everyone to purchase insuance.

This Thanksgiving as we praise God for his blessings on this America we love and cherish an earnest prayer is on our lips and in our hearts.  The freedoms and opportunities that abounded in our lifetimes were sometimes taken for granted.  The generations who fought the World Wars, endured and survived the Great Depression and persevered through it all to provide a better future for us are mostly with us in memory only. Time and again they paid dearly so that a free America would survive. There work was well finished and we are the benefactors.Barbara Samuells head shot

Our founders knew that only a moral and educated populace could sustain the Republic they had founded.  We pray that our generations, with the help of Divine Providence, can sustain that free and abundant opportunity for the generations which follow.

Our work here is not easy but we cannot turn aside.  One sure remedy to many of America's difficulties is a renewal of our knowledge of our own history.  At our ages who would have thought we would want or need to learn more of our American History? And yet the greatness of America was enabled by those long ago judgements and decisions of our Founding Fathers.

Books and courses and even book clubs focused on our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Founding Fathers and America's history and development are everywhere.  Patriots across America are reading, learning and sharing new understanding of the intended functioning of our Republic.

This is the knowledge needed to recognize the distortions in our governance which attack and threaten the fundamental tenets of a free and prosperous America.

Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government.
