Best Intersession Ever!

Summit Public Schools logoBased on early feedback and my visits to the various classes last month, we had a very successful intersession.  If you had a chance to attend an exhibition or performance, you saw how excited students were to share what they learned.  We offered several new courses, expanded capacity in some of the most popular ones such as photography and rock ensemble and added many half-day courses this year, offering an unprecedented level of choice.

This month I will be reaching out to all stakeholders (parents, students, faculty and intersession teachers) to gather feedback on our Intersession program and I look forward to your constructive comments and suggestions.  Look for something in the Everest newsletter with a link to an on-line survey in the next couple of weeks.  Thank-you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts about intersession.  We value your feedback as we look for ways to make our program even better!

If you took photos or shot video of the intersession exhibits and performances, please take the time to select one or two of your best shots/clips and e-mail them to me at:  lstevenin@summitps.org

Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to our parent volunteers for your commitment to this unique and special program and for the tremendous effort to support our intersession classes.  With your help we were able to fill just about every volunteer need in January.  We could not have such a successful intersession without you!

From the Faculty

Your math teachers are ecstatic to announce that there is a new academic support structure available to students!  Every Tuesday and Thursday, between 3:20 - 5:00, we have two volunteer teachers available to help students in math in any way they can.  Be it helping on homework, working on past year's content, or providing extensions of previous material - they can make it happen.

Please encourage your kids to attend.  The math teachers and volunteers are working to make the time as effective as possible for your individual student.

Faculty Corner -- Who am I?

We are so fortunate to have faculty members who are excited about teaching at Everest and so interested in our students.  The community wants to get to know them better, too.  Can you guess who this faculty member is from these clues?

Where did you grow up?  When did you last visit there?  What is the most interesting fact about your hometown?

I was born in Santa Rosa, but I grew up in Salinas, CA.  I last visited Salinas this past Christmas.  Did you know that 80% of the nation's lettuce is grown in Salinas?  Also, John Steinbeck is a Salinas native and writes about the area in many of his books.

What was your favorite high school class?

My favorite high school class was AP Government.  My teacher had the perfect balance of rigor and compassion.  She started each class with a headline from the news and empowered us to get involved in our community/world.

What extracurricular experiences did you have/enjoy most in high school?

My favorite extracurricular experience in high school was student government.  I loved coming up with new ideas for student events and promoting collaboration between clubs and organizations on campus.  By my senior year, I was Student Body President, which was an awesome experience in understanding the power of team work.

Who influenced you most as a child/teen?

My grandparents influenced me most as a teen.  I lived with them for a few years growing up and their dedication, integrity, and compassion inspired me.

What was your major in college?  Minor?  What would you major in now if you had the chance?

My major was Political Science and my Minor was Education.  If I had a chance to go back, I'd take more psychology courses.

What was your most rewarding undergraduate experience?

My study abroad experience living with a family in Spain was a turning point in developing my passion for travel, international relations, and learning new languages.

What is your favorite song? Band and/or singer?

My favorite artist is Regina Spektor.  She's amazing!

What is the single most important piece of advice you can offer Everest students?

Keep an open mind to new ideas and new perspectives.  Any experience or person can teach you a valuable lesson and enrich your life.

Can you guess the mystery faculty member?  See below for the answer.

EPO News

SnowflakeOn Friday night spirits ran high as many Everest students took part in an a very enjoyable dance coordinated by the Everest Spirit Club with the support of a lot of very dedicated parents and teachers.

Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this event so much fun.  Special appreciation and kudos to Toni Trijuillo Vian for her amazing leadership - in the same week where she also spearheaded the coordination of the first Everest soccer teams!

March 16-18 Sophomore Study Trip to LA -- needs drivers! We need adults who are willing to drive and chaperone 90 students, which means we'll need about 27 parents willing to help out for the three days. To sign up to volunteer, please go to the Study Trip link on the EPO website, at:  http://sites.google.com/site/everestepo/Committees/student-events/driver-volunteers
You can also sign up at the front desk, or call Cendy Dionicio (650) 465-0569, to speak to a Spanish speaker.

In order to drive, you need to fill out the driver application form (see the file called 'DriverApplicationForm2010' posted on the Study Trip link). Forms are also available at the front desk.  You must also provide a copy of your 1) driver's license, 2) registration, and 3) Proof of Insurance card (showing policy #, expiration date, and policyholder.)  If possible, email a copy of these three documents with the driver application form to EverestFrontDesk@gmail.com. Otherwise, bring them to the front desk as soon as possible.  PLEASE TRY TO SUBMIT YOUR COPIES BEFORE THE END OF FEBRUARY.  This will save our driver organizers the stress of last-minute recruiting.   Even if you have driven for past Everest trips, our driving documents expire, and we need to have current information for all drivers for this trip.

Thanks! If you have any questions about driving, please contact one of our two parent volunteer coordinators: Joanna Sakowicz (meanlizard@gmail.com or 650- 520-7726) or Allison Davis (agoetzdavis@comcast.net or 510-579-4665).

PARENT EDUCATION - Please save the date, February 16, for a follow-up to the drug awareness presentation in January at Summit.  Please plan to participate from 7 - 9 p.m. for this rich discussion.  We've engaged the PCRC to facilitate a community discussion about how we, as parents, can promote healthy decision-making among our students. We've communicated parents' top concerns to PCRC, and they are tailoring a presentation to meet our interests.  This parent education session is sponsored by the Summit Parent Ed program, and all Everest parents are welcome.

verest Athletics

Baseball is here!  If your son (or daughter) wants to play and has not signed up, there is still time.  Contact Dek Ketchum at (650) 207-7385 and he will get the forms to you.

The Everest Baseball Team will start practice in about 2 weeks when the basketball season ends.  Practices will be at Garfield Park in Redwood City and games with other schools are being scheduled.  We have a volunteer coach, Austin Miller, who played four years of college baseball who is very enthusiastic and excited to be coaching our team.  Anthony Morello, who played college baseball with Coach Miller, will be the assistant coach.

Baseball GloveWe have approximately 14 boys who have signed up to play.  However, we cannot get our field times from Redwood City until we receive all of the athletic forms back from parents of prospective players.  We have about 8 families who have not yet dropped the forms off at reception.  Please get your forms in immediately at the reception desk at school and Dek Ketchum will pick them up.

The baseball team has scholarship and grant money.  Financial assistance is available to help families afford baseball equipment including practice pants, baseball shoes or a glove.  Please contact Dek if you are interested.

Lastly, we need a volunteer parent to assist in coordinating getting players to from Everest to practice and to games when the scheduling is completed.  Please contact Dek  if you can help.
