Brock Badgers Baseball to host inaugural Labour Day Classic
This Labour Day weekend, the Brock Badgers Baseball Club will host the first ever Labour Day Classic tournament. The defending OUA Champion Badgers will host long-time rivals like the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and Western Mustangs, as well as local clubs. Games will be played at Community Park in Merritton, and Burgar Park and Welland Stadium in Welland. The tournament kicks off at 10 A.M on September 2nd at Community Park, with a game featuring the Badgers versus the Ontario Terriers. After coming up just short of a National Championship in 2010, the Badgers will compete for the Labour Day Classic championship while also using the tournament as a tune-up before a run towards their second consecutive OUA Championship that begins with a game against Queen's University on September 7th. Admission for the tournament is only $5 for the weekend, or $2 per day, while regular season games are free.

NSC Announces some new changes

PRESS RELEASE Wed. Aug. 10th, 2011:
The Niagara Sport Commission would like to thank Mr. Scott McRoberts for his leadership as Executive Director over the past two years. McRoberts joined the NSC in 2009 after fulfilling several executive sport leadership roles within the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a graduate of the Brock University Sport Management program and holds a Master's degree from the University of San Francisco.
During his time with the NSC, McRoberts had overseen marquis Niagara sporting events such as the World FISA Masters, U25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships and several Ontario Basketball Championships, and solidified Niagara's role within the upcoming 2015 Toronto PAN AM Games. To quote Scott, "I have truly enjoyed being back in Niagara and to be able to be a part of advancing such a great Regional project as the Niagara Sport Commission. I would like to thank all of those whom I have worked with and the many great friends I have made. I wish the organization all the best in the future".
Monday August 8th was Scott McRoberts' official last day with the NSC. Mr. McRoberts will be taking his knowledge of large-scale event management, facilities, and community development to the University of Toronto, as the newly appointed Director of Athletics and Recreation at the Scarborough campus. We wish Scott and his family all the best in his new endeavour.
The NSC Board of Directors has been actively implementing strategies to manage the transition, including the anticipated hiring of an Interim Executive Director by mid-August. As well, the Board has hired a former elite athlete with extensive business experience to lead communications and sponsor partnerships for the Commission, in order to continue to grow the region's sporting success and community focused athletic programs.
The entire NSC organization is excited about the future and growing sports tourism as one of Niagara's top industries and encouraging sport participation in our community.

Niagara will welcome Ontario Basketball once again in 2012 and 2013!

The Niagara Sport Commission, in partnership with the Niagara Falls Red Raiders, is proud to have won the bid to host the Ontario Cup provincial championships for Ontario Basketball in 2012 and 2013.
After successfully hosting the provincials twice this year, the NSC will welcome the Under-12 Major Atom Boys and Under-17 Juvenile Boys both years. We're looking forward to building on the success that was had at the tournaments we held in 2011 to make these championships bigger and better.
One initiative that is sure to add to the success of the provincials is a new partnership between Ontario Basketball and InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG). This union will provide traveling teams and their families with consistent hotel experiences including competitive rates, improved amenitites, centralized booking available from the Ontario Basketball website, meal discounts, local tourism opportunities and more. This partnership will also provide host clubs with a portion of hotel compensation that can be put back into programming.
In all, it's a partnership that is sure to boost the economical impact of the NSC hosting these provincial championships in the Niagara Region. For more information, including a full list of 2012 and 2013 Ontario Cup dates and host clubs, click here! |
Looking to host a sporting event in Niagara?
The Niagara Sport Commission is looking for local sport organizations that would like to participate in the first annual Celebration of Sports Festival (SportsFest), presented by CAA Winter Festival of Lights.
SportsFest is a multi-sport, multi-age group event comprising traditional and non-traditional amateur sports competitions coupled with activities such as sports exhibits, ice sculpting, fireworks, celebrity appearances, coaching seminars and more.
SportsFest will take place January 27-29, 2012 and offers many benefits for regional sport organizations (RSOs) and their participants, including:
- Revenue Sharing: RSOs would share in net SportsFest revenues based on a per participant basis
- Accommodations & Attractions: SportsFest can secure preferred room rates/discounts to numerous attractions and a shuttle service
- Dedicated Marketing & Media Support: SportsFest will have its own URL, Facebook page, and Twitter accounts
- Event Management Expertise & Experience: SportsFest brings together the depth of knowledge of the Niagara Sport Commission, CAA Winter Festival of Lights and RSOs
- Volunteers: SportsFest can help recruit, train and assign volunteers with a volunteer database and online software
- Lower Expenses: SportsFest can provide savings through volume discounts and bulk purchases
For RSOs without an existing event, SportsFest could be the springboard to establish a tournament and help generate new revenues for your RSO.

NSC at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta
The Niagara Sport Commission would like to thank the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of tradition and history. This year's 129th Regatta was an exciting one, and the NSC could not be happier to have been involved.
We would like to thank all of the organizers, athletes, coaches, spectators, umpires and volunteers that opened their arms to the NSC this past week. This is a unique event that requires a lot of dedication from various community members, as approximately 4,000 people participate in some way every year. The NSC was happy to not only witness world class rowers in action, but lend some of our members as volunteers as well. We hope to take part in this event for years to come!
