Niagara Sport Commission to Receive Binational Star Award
The Niagara Sport Commission is honoured to attend the 2011 Binational Summit as a recipient of the 2010 Binational Star Awards. The NSC will be recognized for successfully facilitating the coordination and delivery of Canadian and U.S. student volunteer services during the IIHF World Juniors.
The ceremony is part of the Binational Summit, which takes place on March 10th and 11th at the Americana Conference Resort & Spa in Niagara Falls, ON. The Opening Reception on the night of the 10th will include not only the Awards Ceremony, but a food and wine event featuring cross-border tastings as well as an 1812 Bicentennial Cultural Showcase, complete with music, dance and visual arts.
The Summit continues on March 11th from 8am to 5pm as the focus shifts to the reinvention of our binational gateways, with emphasis on global gateways, sport tourism and the 1812 Bicentennial. Guest speakers will include Terry Wright, Executive VP of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games, Michael Gilbert of the Buffalo Sabres, our own Scott McRoberts and many more.

OBA Provincials are Almost Here!

The Ontario Basketball Provincial Championships are fast approaching! This year, Niagara will play host to the Under-11 Atom Boys from April 1st through to the 3rd, with the Niagara Sport Commission taking the lead on the event, in partnership with the Niagara Falls Red Raiders.
Fifty-two teams and over 700 athletes will participate in the tournament held at both Brock University and Niagara College. The tournament will also look to engage the Sport Management program at Brock University, as twenty students from the program have already come on board to assist with the execution of this event.
The Niagara Sport Commission is excited for this opportunity to strengthen Niagara Region's involvement with basketball while continuing to promote youth involvement in sport. We look forward to hosting this event and hope to bring it back to the Niagara Region in the future. The NSC will also host the U-17 boys May 27-29.

Free Workshop for Niagara Coaches in Welland
|
The City of Welland and the Ontario Coaches Association have partnered to bring Niagara Region coaches the opportunity to attend a free Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop. The workshop will benefit anyone working with children ages 3 to 12 in a recreation or sport setting. The focus will be on teaching proper movement skills such as running, jumping and balance, and will provide emphasis on daily physical activity as well.
The course will take place on Saturday April 16th from 8:30am to 5pm at the Civic Square (60 East Main Street in Welland). For more information on what the course has to offer, click here.

LeagueToolbox Making its Mark in Niagara

Three more sport organizations in Niagara have recently come on board with LeagueToolbox. The Niagara-on-the-Lake Softball Association, the Niagara Girls Minor Softball Association and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Soccer club have all adopted this program that is designed to allow organizations to run more efficiently and effectively.
LeagueToolbox is a software program that allows organizations of any size to utilize online registration for their athletes, maintain a simple and interactive website, automatically schedule entire seasons of play, and facilitate quick and easy communication with all members of an organization, from referees to coaches to parents.

CSTA and NSC Helping to Bring Events to the Niagara Region

If you are considering hosting an event in the Niagara Region, the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) and the Niagara Sport Commission can help. The CSTA Sport Event Bid Template covers everything from the benefits of hosting an event, to how to submit a bid, to risk management. It even provides an informative bid template for organizations to use as a guide.

| CCAA National Basketball Coming to Niagara | |
The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's National Basketball Championships will come to Niagara later this month. Niagara College will play host to the top eight collegiate teams in Canada over the four-day championship.
The Belairdirect CCAA All-Canadian Banquet will act as opening ceremonies for the tournament on March 16th at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, with games starting the following day at Niagara College's new state-of-the-art athletic centre at the Welland Campus. The medal games will take place on March 19th, the final day of the Championship.
Local and national businesses and organizations have stepped up to sponsor this national event that will bring hundreds of athletes, coaches, parents and fans to the Niagara Region.
