City Council Meeting:   The next Windsor Heights City Council meeting is on Monday, June 6th at 6:00 p.m.  The agenda can be found here.   In addition, a special city council study session will be held on Thursday, June 9th at 4:00 p.m. at city hall.  The agenda will be posted next week on the city's website. 
  
University Blvd Construction:  Beginning Monday, June 6, 2011, University Avenue will be closed to through traffic between North Walnut Creek in Clive and the intersection of NW 73rd Street in Windsor Heights.  This closure will remain in effect until mid to late August while widening and reconstruction along this final section of University Avenue is completed.  Construction to widen the existing bridge within the closure area will continue during this same timeframe.

 

The designated detour will route traffic south along NW 86th Street and 73rd/8th Streets to Interstate 235.  The intersection of University Avenue and NW 75th Street will remain open during this phase of construction.

 

Traffic in and around the affected area (vehicular and pedestrian) is encouraged to exercise caution and/or seek alternate routes as delays may occur.  Please contact Clive Community Development at 223-6221 with questions, concerns or the need for additional information.


  
Nominate Spiffy Yards for Recognition:  The Most Beautiful Yard contest, sponsored by the Keep Windsor Heights Beautiful Committee, recognizes well-kept properties.  All residential yards within the city limits are eligible. Nominations are being accepted now. Email jheggen@windsorheights.org  to nominate yourself or a neighbor, or mail or deliver the nomination to Windsor Heights City Hall, 1133 66th St., Windsor Heights, IA 50324. The nomination must include your name, address and phone number plus that of the property owner. Include a short summary describing why the property deserves recognition.
The first-prize winner will receive a stepping stone valued at $150. Two runners-up will each receive a $50 gift certificate from Wild Birds Unlimited. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m., Friday, June 17.
  
  
Music in the Park:  Music in the Park start this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.  with the Java Jews at Colby Park.  Please click here to read the entire schedule. 
  
Shrek  
Movies in the Park:   Movies in the Park is back again this year in Colby Park. With a fabulous line-up, it will truly be outdoor cinema at its best, thanks not only to the setting but also to the selections made by an all-volunteer committee. All movies are free and begin at dusk. Lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are all welcome. We will have kids activities and a bouncy house before the movie, so come early and enjoy some park time with your family.  Our first movie is on June 17th and will feature Shrek Forever After.  Click here to see the entire schedule. 

  
Father's Day Bike Ride:  A Father's Day Bike Ride will be held on Sunday, June 19th and starts at Colby Park, the Pavilion at 1 p.m.  The ride will head to Principal Ballpark.  If some riders don't want to got that far, they can turn back at the bridge in Waterworks.  Free power bars will be handed out.  Questions? Tai Chi Classes:  Windsor Heights residents will receive $5.00 off this summer's Tai Chi classes, to be offered at the Windsor Heights Community & Event Center on Monday evenings.  Don't miss this opportunity to learn and participate in a holistic approach to body, mind, and spirit.  Two different classes are available:
            Intro to Tai Chi, Monday evenings beginning June 13 for eight weeks, 6 - 7 pm, $40
            Tai Chi TuneUp, Monday evenings beginning Jun 13 for eight weeks, 7:30 - 8:30 pm, $40

Movie showing in the Community and Events Center:  The city of Windsor Heights, in conjunction with the Nature Conservancy and the Aldo Leopold Foundation will present, Green Fire, a full-length, high-definition documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his environmental legacy.  Green Fire shares highlights from his extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation and the modern environmental movement. It also illustrates how Leopold's vision of a community that cares about both people and land continues to inform and inspire people across the country and around the world.  Click here for more information.  The movie will be shown on June 9th at 6:30 p.m.
  
Yoga
Enjoy a mid-week break with an hour of Hatha Yoga on Wednesdays, from 6:45-7:45 p.m., beginning June 8 and continuing through August 3 (no class July 8]). Stretch, relax, grow stronger and more flexible, and explore the physical and mental benefits of this ancient mind-body practice. Taught by Robin Bourjaily, a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, this multi-level class is suitable for beginners and continuing yogis alike. Robin will encourage exploration of the breath, the poses and deep relaxation. Please bring a yoga mat and dress in comfortable loose clothing. Children 10 and under, are asked to bring a parent or trusted adult to practice with them. If you have questions, contact Robin at robin@posesandprose.com.

Help Support July 4th and Fireworks in Windsor Heights:  The city always wants to provide the most enjoyable experience during July 4th, but all the wonderful activities cost money.  In order to help cover the expenses, buttons are for sale at city hall for $2 to help raise money for fireworks.  Please stop in and show your support for fireworks during the 4th. The city would like to offer a big thank you to Premium Solutions for donating the buttons.   In addition, the below artwork was commissioned and numbered prints are for sale for $25 at city hall.  Of the $25, $20 would be considered tax deductible.
