 Citizen Transportation Congress
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host the Citizen Transportation Congress (Congress) on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, to engage citizens and to provide them with a deeper understanding of the MPO and its activities. The MPO will host two meet meetings. The meetings will begin at 12:00 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m., and will be held at the Des Moines Central Library (1000 Grand Avenue), which is accessible via public transportation using the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority's (DART) #1 or #4 bus routes.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the MPO and its role in the metropolitan area at the Congress. Additionally, participants will learn about current MPO initiatives, including the regional plan for sustainable development and an intermodal freight study. Staff also will provide updates on upcoming projects in the metropolitan area.

The MPO holds the Congress semi-annually in an effort to educate the public about the role the MPO plays in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The Congress also enables the MPO to gather comments from the public regarding general transportation issues. In addition to the Congress, the MPO engages the public through meetings, publications, its website, social media endeavors, and online surveys.

The Congress will utilize an open forum format to encourage attendees to express views, share opinions, and ask questions regarding the MPO and its activities. One may share their opinion with MPO staff in three ways: 1) orally at the meeting; 2) in writing via forms available at the meeting; or, 3) by submitting written comments to the MPO after the May 10 meeting but prior to the close of the comment period on May 14.

If there are specific topics that you would like to learn about at the Congress, please contact Bethany Wilcoxon by telephone at (515) 334-0075 or via email at bwilcoxon@dmampo.org. More information about the MPO is available online at http://www.dmampo.org/.

DART Forward 2035: The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) is working on a long-range planning study called DART Forward 2035. When complete later this year, the plan will be used to guide the growth of public transit in greater Des Moines over the next 25 years. Quite literally, the public transit system of the future is being developed today.

You can let DART know how you think the greater Des Moines transit system should be developed over the next 25 years. There are two ways:

  • Fill out an online survey
  • Attend a public meeting
    • Des Moines Central Library (1000 Grand Avenue): Tuesday, April 5th at 11:30 a.m. or Wednesday, April 6th at 5:30 p.m.
    • Urbandale Public Library (3520 86th Street): Tuesday, April 5th at 5:15 p.m.
    • Ankeny City Hall (410 West First Street): Thursday, April 7th at 5:30 p.m.

The survey results and public comments will help DART tremendously as they move into the next phase of the planning study: developing draft service recommendations. Once those are developed, DART will hold a second round of public meetings in July to garner public feedback on the recommendations.

DART thanks you in advance for your interest in DART Forward 2035. The transit system will play an increasingly important role in the long-term growth of greater Des Moines, and now is the time to plan that future.
