Street Sweeping to soon begin in Windsor Heights:  The Windsor Heights City Council recently approved an agreement with the City of West Des Moines for street sweeping. The City of West Des Moines has newer equipment than was used by the private contractor and has agreed to handle sweeping activities for $95 per hour. Previously, it took the private contractor 12-16 hours to sweep the entire city. If it were to take West Des Moines' personnel the same amount of time, the cost would be $1,520 instead of $4,986. It should be noted that the newer equipment is also faster, but until West Des Moines has done an initial sweeping, staff will not know exactly how much time it will take to sweep Windsor Heights' streets.

Windsor Heights' is scheduled to have our streets swept the week of April 4th-8th, June 13th-17th, August 29th-2nd and November 14th-18th, the exact date the sweeper is on your street is dependent on the weather.  Staff asks that residents please refrain from parking on the streets during these weeks so that our streets can be swept properly.

Dog Park Temporarily Closed: The Windsor Heights Dog Park located south of Colby Park and I-235 is temporarily closed to allow recently planted grass to germinate and become established.  Sorry of the inconvenience.  The park will reopen in early April.

Bicycle Collection:  May is Bike Month in the Des  Moines Metro and as part of the activities, Windsor Heights is helping sponsor a bicycle collection with the non-profit Des Moines Bicycle Collective.  Check your garage or basement and take a bike inventory. If you have any unused bikes that you would like to put towards a good cause, please donate them to the Bicycle Collective.  The Collective will then refurbish your good used bike and sale or loan those bikes to the public.  The money collected from the sale of the bikes is used to conduct bicycle safety and maintenance programs with youth organization, businesses and local schools.  The group also uses the funds to help produce the metro trails maps (which are available free of charge at city hall) and many other programming related to bicycling.  During the week of May 9-13 a trailer will be located at Colby Park in the parking lot where you can put your bike for the Collective to refurbish.

Your donation is tax deductible and receipts will be made available by Bicycle Collective

Ready, set WHAMM!
2011 Windsor Heights Annual Mini Marathon
Walk, Run, Be Healthy
On Saturday, May 21st, runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the 2011 Windsor Heights Annual Mini Marathon, better known as WHAMM and a perennial favorite in central Iowa.  The 8:00 am walk/race benefits the individuals and families coping with muscular dystrophy and related progressive muscle diseases. The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides comprehensive medical services to over 500 people in Central Iowa.

Registration takes place at www.getmeregistered.com.  Both the 5K Run/Walk (single loop) and the 10K (double loop) start and end at 66th and University and travel through the beautiful neighborhoods of Windsor Heights.  Parking is available at the Remax parking lot, 66 & University.

Des Moines MDA Executive Director Danielle Etter notes, "WHAMM brings the community together for a worthwhile cause. It's a great opportunity to have fun and spend time with friends while helping others."

Last year's WHAMM raised over $5,000, and it's hoped this year's event will beat that total. Individuals and teams are encouraged to participate in this community wide event. Shirt and post race food will be provided to all participants, and medals to the top males and females in the 5K and 10K overall.
New this year will be a community health fair following the race where local businesses will share information and screenings, safety demonstrations and children's activities.  Supporters and participants include Blood Bank of Iowa, the Mercy Hospital mammography screening, a dietician from Hy-Vee, and the Windsor Heights Police with information about car seat safety.  Together with WHAMM, this add on fair is an example of how we can create environments that support health.

MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat muscular dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, advocacy, and far-reaching professional and public health education. The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.

For more information about WHAMM, visit www.getmeregistered.com and www.fitnesssports.com or contact Danielle Etter, 515-453-9489, MDA or Tracy Levine, 645-6821, City of Windsor Heights.
