Former Fire Chief Al Hunter Dies
The City of Windsor Heights would like to offer heartfelt condolences to the family of Albert Hunter, former fire chief. Chief Hunter died this morning at the age of 79.
Mr. Hunter was the City's first career fire chief for the Windsor Heights Fire Department and served with distinction and honor for 26 years. In 2004, Chief Hunter retired and was Citizen of the Year. That same year, the City Council voted to rename the street where he lived to Hunter Circle.
During his tenure with the Windsor Heights Fire Department, Chief Hunter dedicated himself to the highest standards of safety, training and emergency services for firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Mr. Hunter was also an integral part of the State of Iowa's Emergency Management Efforts and he served as the first EMS Chief for the State Health Department. Mayor Jerry Sullivan said, "Chief Hunter demonstrated throughout his career that his chief function as a public servant was to serve the interests of all people. He was a terrific leader who contributed greatly to enhancing the quality of life in Windsor Heights. He will be missed." Mr. Hunter was also active in his church, the Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and in the Windsor Heights Lions Club. Chief Hunter is remembered fondly by his colleagues, his fire fighters, his neighbors and his entire community. Visitation is Sunday from 5-8 at Westover Chapel(6337 Hickman Road) Funeral is at the Windsor Heights Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. After the funeral, there will not be an interment. Traffic flow will be restricted on University Avenue from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. due to the processional from the funeral home to the church between 63rd and 73rd. We will hope to minimize traffic disruption, but delays can be expected during that timeframe.

'Refresher' Bridge Lessons to be Offered at Windsor Heights Community & Events Center Now that the beautiful new Windsor Heights Community and Events Center is open for rentals, there will begin to be classes and workshops available to the public and offered through the City of Windsor Heights. In January, Nancy Wilson, accredited bridge teacher, will be teaching a bridge refresher class. This class is designed for players who have not played for several years or for those that have taken previous lesson and desire to learn the current strategies to winning bridge, as well as brush up on their skills. Classes begin January 19, 2011 for six weeks Wednesdays, 1:00 pm - 3:30 p.m.
