President's Message February turned out to be a busy month as we saw several of our dogs find their forever homes and brought several more into our foster program.
 | | Eric | First, we are happy to report that Eric, the 7 month old puppy who last month had to have surgery to repair both of his back legs, is doing splendidly. Thank you so much to everyone who donated to make that surgery possible! Eric is currently in a temporary foster home but is getting the pins removed from his legs today and then will be making the trip to the CSTR FL foster program in Tallahassee. He will be evaluated in his new foster home and then will be available for adoption. We hope to post his Petfinder profile soon!
This month, CSTR was contacted about two Shih Tzu in southern Illinois who needed to get into rescue.
 | | Michael | Of course we sprang into action, and Tammy Sue, recently released from a Missouri puppy mill, and Rusty, a stray who found himself in an area animal shelter, entered the foster program soon after. And then not a week later, we were contacted yet again about a 4 year old male Shih Tzu who had been added, unexpectedly,to a puppy mill release transport as it went through Missouri. So Michael entered the CSTR IL program, as well. All three of these dogs are very sweet and very adoptable!
The CSTR FL program also saw two new additions when we were
 | | Dixie | contacted about two senior Shih Tzu girls who had found themselves at a Gainesville, FL kill shelter where, due to their age and health issues, they were considered unadoptable. Both girls came in separately as strays, are seniors, easily past the 10 years of age mark, and both have significant eye issues. They are safely in Tallahassee, now. Dixie has dry eye and pigmentary keratitis so has retained a bit of her vision, but unfortunately, Charlotte has mature cataracts and so is completely blind. Both girls are sweet, though, and, despite their blindness, are quite adoptable so we hope to find forever homes for them soon!
We do still need help with raising the funds to care for these dogs as well as the others currently in our program. Huge thanks to all of you who continue to donate to our vet fund! We truly appreciate your | | Charlotte |
dedication and commitment to CSTR and the dogs we take into our program. As I wrote last month, as we commit to bringing each dog in, we have been posting "ChipIns" for the vetting costs for each of them and asking our friends and fans to donate to help raise the money to cover those costs. Sadly, the economy has affected all of us, and donations and adoptions continue to be down significantly to the point that the CSTR Vet Fund is almost completely depleted. So we continue to need your help. If you can help us, please visit the ChipIns page to donate with your credit card or PayPal, or you can also visit the CSTR website for more information on other ways you can donate.
As I have said in previous newsletters, we are, unfortunately, unable to use the Pepsi Refresh grant money for anything other than the construction of the retirement home (see below for an update), and so as always, we desperately need donations toward the care of the dogs in our program. Again, to donate for specific dogs who are needing care, please visit the "ChipIns Page" of the CSTR website or the CSTR Refuge page if you'd like to donate for their care. Or, if you prefer to make a general donation - even $10 or $20 - visit the CSTR website for donation information. No donation is too small and all money goes directly to the care of the dogs in the CSTR program.

Remember, as always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Retirement Home Update
We are excited to report yet another Polo's Refuge (Senior Dog Retirement Home) update! Construction on the first phase of the fencing has been completed, and the architectural drawings for the building itself have been received and permit applications submitted. Now the waiting begins again as we wait for the county to approve our permit requests! But we remain encouraged and excited that the project is moving forward. We hope to have this project completed and the first residents in the home by Memorial Day.
For those of you who would like to have a part in the home, we are going to need 12 Kurandra beds for the home, and Kuranda is offering them at a special price for those wanting to donate. So far, we have had 6 donated, so we just need 6 more! We will also be purchasing the covers and orthopedic pads for the Kuranda beds to make them extra comfy. Everyone who donates a bed will have their name engraved on a plaque that will hang on the wall in the home.
And remember.. for regular updates as construction continues and Polo's Refuge becomes a reality, be sure to "like" us on Facebook. |
Home At Last
February was a better month for adoptions, thankfully! We are very pleased to report that Brandon, Isabella, Makayla and Zoi found their forever homes! And we also forgot to add Ridley to the list of CSTR foster dogs who found their forever homes in January!
