President's Message
January turned out to be a relatively busy one for CSTR, despite doing only two adoptions.
Holly
Holly - FL

First to come into the CSTR FL program was 5 year old Holly, who was being given away for free on Tallahassee's Freecycle group.  Poor Holly had not been adequately cared for and had several rotten teeth and a hernia the size of a golf ball when we got her.  Now, though, after a dental and hernia repair, she is ready for a forever home of her own!

Next, we were contacted about 2 year old Brandon who had been
Brandon
picked up as a stray in Kankakee, IL.  His owners were contacted but did not come to pick him up, so Brandon entered the CSTR foster program on 1/14.  He has finished his shelter quarantine period and is now ready for a forever home of his own, as well.

Just when it seemed like things were going to slow down a bit, we were contacted on 1/23/12 about 7 month old Eric who had been hit by a car on 1/15/12 but who had yet to have treatment for the breaks in his

legs.  CSTR volunteers sprung into action, and Eric was at a local vet that same day.  We were told he was in an incredible amount of pain, but the sweet baby never once showed even the slightest bit of aggression when he was examined.  Fortunately for Eric, his pelvis was not broken, and the breaks in his legs were clean.  He had surgeries to place pins in both legs that afternoon and next day.  He is currently still on crate rest at the vet's office, but we hope to have him in a foster home very soon for the rest of his rehabilitation.

We are fortunate to have such an incredible set of "fans" on our Facebook page.  I honestly can't thank them enough for coming through for us for the costs of the vetting for Holly, Brandon, and Eric.  As we commit to bringing each dog into our program, we have been posting "ChipIns" for the vetting costs for each of them and asking our friends and fans to donate to help raise the money to cover those costs.  Sadly, the economy has affected all of us, and donations and adoptions have been down significantly to the point that the CSTR Vet Fund is almost completely depleted.  And today, February 2, we have four dogs that have come in yesterday or are coming in tomorrow.  Two are seniors from a kill shelter and 2 are refugees from a Missouri puppy mill.  We seem to have hit a wall, though, in getting their intake sponsorships covered.  Would you help?  We need to raise this money - $1200 total - in order to be able to get them the vetting they need, so if you can help us, please visit the ChipIns page to donate with your credit card or PayPal, or you can also
visit the CSTR website for more information on other ways you can donate.

As I have said previously, unfortunately, we are unable to use the Pepsi Refresh grant money for anything other than the construction of the retirement home, and so as always, we desperately need donations toward the care of the dogs in our program.  Again, to donate for specific dogs who are needing care, please visit the "ChipIns Page" of the CSTR website. If you prefer to make a general donation - even $10 or $20 - visit the CSTR website for donation information.  We, and the CSTR foster dogs, would greatly appreciate it.

Remember, as always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Retirement Home Update
We are extremely excited to report that the Senior Dog Retirement Home, known as Polo's Refuge, is well on its way to becoming a reality.  In mid-January, the first purchase was made in the ordering of the building that will serve as the home, and then just as January came to a close, the first phase of  construction began on the fencing that will be around the building.  We are thrilled that this dream is finally becoming a reality.  For regular updates as construction continues and this home becomes a reality, be sure to "like" us on Facebook.
