President's Message
Happy New Year!

What an incredible year 2011 turned out to be.  Thanks to the tireless efforts of our wonderful foster parents and volunteers and the generosity of our supporters, we were able to save 86 dogs and place 71 in forever homes.  These dogs would have had no chance, otherwise, and so CSTR literally saved their lives by taking them into our program.   A great example of one of those dogs whose life was literally saved is Bryant.

Bryant - Before
This was the heartbreaking photo that was sent to me from the volunteers at Chicago Animal Care & Control, asking if we could help.  To be honest, at first I thought the dog had to be facing the corner because I couldn't make out any facial features at all!  He was labeled as a Pekingese and slated for euthanasia, and while we didn't usually take Pekingese, I couldn't let him die if we could help him, so we brought him into our program.

A bath and a haircut revealed that the dog we named Bryant was not a Pekingese but was actually a Shih Tzu!  He was sick and had significant eye issues, but he still had a life to live. With good food and care, today Bryant is a gorgeous and happy fellow who was adopted by one of the CSTR board members.

Dogs like Bryant - those who have no hope without us - are who we hope to continue to help in 2012, but we can't do it without your help.  To see the dogs that we are currently attempting to raise funds for treatment for, visit the CSTR website for more information on ways you can donate.

One major way that CSTR plans to make a difference in the lives of the dogs who need us most is by the implementation of our Senior Dog Retirement Home later this year.  Thank you so much to everyone who voted!  I am so pleased to report that our grant proposal was accepted and approved by the Pepsi Refresh Project, and so we will be awarded $25,000 beginning in mid-January.  With the first payment installment from Pepsi, CSTR will be purchasing a building and begin the establishment of the retirement home.  A number of the dogs currently in the CSTR Refuge program will move into the retirement home once it is completed  We will be updating the CSTR Facebook page regularly, so be sure to "like" the page so that you can keep up on what we're doing!   To see more about the dogs currently in the Refuge program, please visit the CSTR website.

Unfortunately, we are unable to use the Pepsi Refresh grant money for anything other than the construction of the retirement home, and so as always, we desperately need donations toward the care of the dogs in our program.  To donate for specific dogs who are needing care, please visit the "ChipIns Page" of the CSTR website. If you prefer to make a general donation - even $10 or $20 - visit the CSTR website for donation information.  We, and the CSTR foster dogs, would greatly appreciate it.

To keep up on what's happening throughout the month with CSTR and our dogs, be sure to "like" our Facebook fan page.

Remember, as always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued encouragement and support.  From the CSTR board, foster parents and volunteers, we wish you the absolute best in 2012!
