President's Message September turned out to be a pretty fantastic month for CSTR foster dogs as we saw fourteen find forever homes! Be sure to check out pictures of just about all of them in the Home At Last feature below!
We were able to get a bit of a breather as intake slowed briefly, as well, which helped a bit when a couple foster homes were unable to take new dogs. October will start with a bang, though, as five puppy mill refugees enter the program on the first day of the month.
After over three weeks in quarantine due to a particularly nasty upper respiratory infection, the five dogs taken from Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC) in August were finally able to move into foster homes as spots opened up from September's adoptions. The CSTR FL program also took in two more dogs. Lyssa, a Shih Tzu/Brussels Griffon mix puppy, was turned over because the people who bought her decided they didn't want her,
 | Bethany | after all. Bethany, a 5 year old Shih Tzu, was taken to a Georgia vet to be euthanized when her foreign-born family decided to return to their home country and did not want to pay to take her with them. Fortunately for her, the vet convinced them to turn her over to him, and she is now in our program.
Then, just as the month was about to close, we received word about a young Shih Tzu at CACC who did not have use of his back legs. CSTR Super Foster Dad, Tom. H., was dispatched
 | Dylan | almost immediately, and within just a few hours of being notified about him, the little boy, now named Dylan, was at Cedar Way Vet Clinic for diagnosis and treatment. At the time of the writing of this article, we only know that it he has an issue with two discs in his spine below his ribcage, resulting in the inability to move his hips, although he can wag his tail and move his feet. He has started treatment, and we hope to be able to report positive results in the next few days.
CSTR is committed to helping dogs like Dylan who would have no other chance, otherwise, but that means that our vet expenses are considerable. We currently have 12 dogs in our program, the majority of them seniors, with ongoing medical conditions requiring frequent vet
 | Savannah | visits, but unfortunately, donations have slowed to little more than a trickle. Fourteen adoptions this month definitely helped us, and we were able to pay off two of our outstanding vet bills, but we still need help. Dylan's vet costs are considerable, and our Savannah, who has already undergone one knee surgery, will need to have surgery on the second knee this month. CSTR Refuge participant, 15 year old Lily, was diagnosed with Cushings in August, while her brother/littermate, Pressley, was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in September. And our Winston continues to defy his medical diagnose of acute renal failure, having already exceeded his expected prognosis by several months. These acute conditions, though, mean ongoing and costly medications and treatment, so we really need your help. If you can donate - even $10 or $20 - we, and the CSTR foster dogs, would greatly appreciate it.
To keep up on what's happening throughout the month with CSTR and our dogs, be sure to "like" our Facebook fan page. And be sure to come out and see us at the Chicago Pet Show October 29-30 in St. Charles, IL!
Remember, as always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Fostering.. An Act of Love
 | Crystal and Juliet |
I had adopted a dog from Crossroads in the summer of 2009. At that time I began following the rescue group on Facebook and enjoyed seeing all the dogs' transitions from when they first came into the rescue to when they were adopted. After seeing the posting numerous times regarding the desperate need for foster homes, I thought "I can do that." My first foster was a little guy named Simon who was only 6 months old at the time, which was a perfect playmate for my little 5 month old boy. We ended up becoming a foster failure and adopted the special little boy who had made a permanent place in our home. At that time we decided to open up our home to more dogs that so desperately needed us. It has been 2 years now and we have fostered approximately 40 dogs. Some had come to us in pretty bad shape either physically or emotionally, but as time went on they were given baths, cleaned up and most of all loved. The simple things that we take for granted with our personal dogs such as a tail wagging, a bark, and a kiss or even the first time they put their feet on you to be picked up are the precious things you cherish while fostering a dog. I had never imagined how rewarding this actually would be; because of me these dogs are able to live happy, healthy lives! Of course there are some foster dogs that have been harder than others to say good bye to; however, it makes it all worth it when you see the joy you can bring to another person and to know it's because of the love you provided to your foster dog.
