Another Reminder About the Weather

With the craziness of our country's weather lately, we would like to remind everyone about the importance of preparing for your pet(s) when you are making preparations for yourself.  Make sure to have a photo and copies of their current vaccination information - especially rabies vaccination.  The scenes and stories come out of the tornado-ravaged areas are heartbreaking, and so many animals have been separated from their families.  So, please make sure that your pet(s) also have collars and ID tags so that they can be reunited with you, should get separated.

President's Message
As spring moves into summer and the temperatures rise, Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue continues to plug along, caring for the dogs in our program and helping as many more as we can.

It was a slow month for adoptions, unfortunately, which means it was a slow month for intake as we just ran out of open foster spots to take in more dogs. That honestly has to be one of the hardest parts of doing rescue..  seeing so many dogs needing help and yet not being able to help them because we just don't have anywhere to put them.  (If you have been thinking about fostering, we could sure use your help!)

Galen
Galen
We did bring 3 dogs into the CSTR Florida program in May, thanks to the wonderful folks who volunteer for Pilots N PawsCharlene, Kane and Galen made the trip from Missouri puppy mills to Tallahassee and the start of their new lives.  Charlene and Kane, both approximately 4-6 years of age, are sweet, friendly, gorgeous Shih Tzu who will make wonderful additions to their forever families, once those families are found.  Poor Galen, a five month old Maltese/Bichon Frise mix, came to CSTR essentially feral, and it is a very slow process teaching him to trust.  He is making progress, though, and I hope to report in the coming months that Galen is ready to find his forever home.

A couple of our Refuge dogs had a very rough May as Winston and
Winston
Winston
Benjamin continue to struggle with renal failure and other related health issues.  Our Refuge program is for dogs in our program who are considered "unadoptable" for health or behavioral reasons, and Winston and Benjamin's advance renal disease mean that they will spend the rest of their lives in their CSTR foster homes.  Both are followed closely by Dr. Frank Hoogeweg of Cedar Way Vet Clinic in New Lenox, IL.

As I'm sure you all can imagine, the vet bills continue to mount from the ongoing costs of these and other Refuge participants as well as the new dogs we have brought in, so we sure could use your help.  If you can donate even the smallest amount, please do.  As always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Yet Another Malcolm Update
Malcolm
Malcolm - before
Last month's newsletter included the first update about Malcolm, who came to CSTR from a Georgia backyard breeder, and his progress after battling sarcoptic mange, untreated dry eye and heartworms.  We couldn't resist sending one more update, just to show what a gorgeous boy Malcolm has turned out to be.
Malcolm
Malcolm - after
Malcolm was groomed for the first time in late May, and we were thrilled to find that his coat has grown in thick and glossy.  He is healthy, very happy, and adapting to his new life outside of the breeding pen with gusto!  Malcolm has moved north to the Illinois foster program now - along with Nena and Garrett - and is looking for his forever home.   Could that be you?
Home At Last
May saw three CSTR foster dogs find their forever homes.  We are thrilled for Colleen but also for Mitzi and Brad, who who found their forever homes with their foster families!  (Our apologies for the lack of photos this month!)

If you've been thinking about adding a new canine member to your family, be sure to visit our IL/IN Petfinder page and FL Petfinder page to see the dogs we currently have for adoption.
