 | | Dr. Quarterman |
| Tallahassee Regional Animal Hospital (TRAH) and Dr. Charles Quarterman, DVM are the newest veterinary practice to partner with CSTR. Dr. Quarterman and his staff have been invaluable to CSTR in the establishment of our new foster and adoption program in Tallahassee, and we are grateful for their ongoing assistance since the program began in September 2010.
TRAH is located in the Eastgate neighborhood off Capital Circle NE near PetSmart. If you are looking for a compassionate, knowledgeable vet with a great "bedside manner" and friendly, helpful staff in Tallahassee, be sure to visit Dr. Quarterman and the TRAH staff soon!

President's Message My apologies for not sending out an April newsletter. I had set out with the best of intentions to get one out before I had carpal tunnel/ulnar nerve surgery on April 1, but time got away from me and it just didn't happen.
 | | Bryant - before | CSTR continues to stay busy with the never-ending flood of dogs needing to get into rescue. We continue to help with puppy mill dogs coming out of Missouri and Iowa, and we have recently also begun helping Chicago Animal Care & Control with the Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mixes that find their way into that enormous animal shelter. Unfortunately, CACC seems to have a never-ending list of dogs needing our help, and we are doing our best to help as often as we possibly can.
In mid-March we were contacted by CACC about a male Shih Tzu needing to get into rescue. The photo of the dog we would eventually call Bryant was heartbreaking, as you can see, and he was obviously in distress from, we later learned, his mouth being matted almost completely shut. He is doing much better after a haircut, but the poor guy was a medical mess as well and needed an eye removed and knee surgery.
8 year old Mitzi came to CSTR via Crest Hill Cat & Dog Clinic after
 | | Mitzi - before | being surrendered by her owner who could no longer afford to care from her. Matted to the skin, she had to be shaved down completely and her raw skin treated. She also suffered from dry eye and severe ear infections. She's doing beautifully now, however, and is ready for a forever home of her own.
It also seemed to be the months of senior dogs being surrendered as CSTR brought Ivan, a 15 year old Lhasa Apso mix, from the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Service Center and Presley and Jilly, 15 year old Shih Tzu/Poodle mixes found on Craiglist by an eagle-eyed CSTR volunteer, into the foster program.
 | | Emma | All in all, it has been a very busy two months for our rescue. We said goodbye to two of our Refuge participants, Gage and Ella, who came into CSTR together from the same puppy mill in 2008 and crossed the Rainbow Bridge within days of each other in April. Refuge participants Winston and Benjamin also continue to take it day by day with their health issues, with more ups than downs, currently. And of course the need never ends. CSTR took a 5 year old Maltese puppy mill survivor that we named Emma into the IL program on April 30 and is working on final arrangements with Pilots N Paws to bring 3 more puppy mill survivors from Missouri to Tallahassee the first week of May.
As I'm sure you all can imagine, the vet bills continue to mount from the ongoing costs of the Refuge participants as well as the new dogs coming in, so we sure could use your help. If you can donate even the smallest amount, please do. As always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Hope and Puppies Update
 | | Hope, Destiny and Kelsee |
We are very pleased to report that Hope, Destiny and Kelsee continue to make progress! Hope was adopted by her foster family in March, and Kelsee tested negative for demodex mange! Destiny still tested positive at her last vet visit, but we are confident she will test negative in the coming weeks, as well, and hope to report the girls' adoptions soon!

Malcolm Update
 | | Malcolm - before |
You may remember a couple of months ago we posted about the Georgia breeder-released dogs that CSTR took into our Tallahassee foster program. One of those dogs, Malcolm, a 6 year old Shih Tzu, came into the program with most of his hair missing, sarcoptic mange, skin and eye infections and heartworms.
 | | Malcolm - after | It's been a long road, but Malcolm is finally feeling better. The sarcoptic mange and skin infections have cleared up, his hair has grown in, and his eyes are finally clear. He and Colleen are finishing up their heartworm treatment and both will be available for adoption by the end of May.
