Cedar Way Vet Clinic

Dr Frank
Cedar Way Vet Clinic and Dr. Frank Hoogeweg have cared for the CSTR foster dogs from almost the very beginning.  Located in the Calistoga Plaza in New Lenox, IL, Dr. Frank and his staff are caring, compassionate friends of CSTR with a special affinity for Shih Tzu!  Of course, they care for other breeds, too, as well as cats.  They have convenient weekday and Saturday hours, so if you are looking for a new "family doctor" for your pets, be sure to visit Dr. Frank and the Cedar Way Vet Clinic staff.

Tzu News
March, 2011
President's Message
2011 continues to be a very busy year for CSTR as the number of dogs needing to get into rescue continues to grow, but unfortunately, we have been limited in the number of dogs we can help.  My apologies that this newsletter is late, but it seemed that an avalanche of dogs and health problems hit just as the month was coming to a close.

We had several dogs come in this month with significant health

conditions, including a senior blind Shih Tzu found caught in a fence in the snow in Kankakee, IL who turned out to be heartworm positive, bringing the total number of dogs being treated for heartworms in our program to three.  We also took in another stray Shih Tzu found in Indiana who is going to need to have an eye removed, a sweet puppy mill girl with mammary cancer and another senior girl with severe flea allergies and evidence of a former stroke who found herself in an Indiana shelter after her owner passed away.

And then on the last day of the month, our Tallahassee vet contacted us that a little puppy was being terribly neglected and abused and had been turned over to him.  Dr. Quarterman asked if we would we be willing to take him into our program, so that afternoon the little 2 pound puppy, eventually named Ricky, became CSTR's last official intake of February 2011.  While we were told he is a Lhasa Apso mix, he looks more like a tiny Pomeranian/possibly Shih Tzu mix who is a bundle of constant energy.  He will be looking for a home of his own in the Tallahassee area in the coming weeks once he is neutered and has had the appropriate vaccinations.

As I'm sure you all can imagine, the vet bills continue to mount with these new dogs, so we sure could use your help.  If you can donate even the smallest amount, please do.  As always, the dogs need us and so we need you.

Hope and Puppies Update
Hope and girls
Hope, Destiny and Kelsee

Hope and her puppies, Destiny and Kelsee, continue to grow and thrive.  Hope has completed her treatment for demodex mange and will be spayed next week.  Destiny and Kelsee began their treatment, and both are improving by the day!  Kelsee has begun to gain weight finally, and we are still enjoying very much being able to share pictures and updates of the puppies via our Facebook page each week as they get older.
Hurricane Preparedness - Florida

For those of you who are in our Florida areas, we would like to encourage you, as you prepare for the 2011 hurricane season, to make sure to prepare for your pets, as well.

Here are a few things to remember, taken from the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Preparedness website -

  • Make sure that your pets are current on their vaccinations.  Pet shelters may require proof of vaccines.
  • Have a current photograph
  • Keep a collar with identification on your pet and have a leash on hand to control your pet.
  • Have a properly-sized pet carrier for each animal - carriers should be large enough for the animal to stand and turn around.
  • Plan your evacuation strategy and don't forget your pet!

A good way to prepare is to put together a pet disaster supply kit so that you are ready should you have to evacuate.  Be sure to have it in a waterproof container with the rest of your hurricane disaster supplies.  In your pet disaster supply kit should be -

  • Proper identification including immunization records and current photographs
  • Ample supply of food and water
  • A carrier or cage
  • Medications
  • Muzzle, collar and leash

Lastly, make sure that your evacuation destination is pet-friendly.  Specialized pet shelters, animal control shelters, veterinary clinics and friends and relatives out of harm's way are ALL potential refuges for your pet during a disaster.   Or, if a hotel/motel is to be your destination, make sure your pets will be welcome.  Petswelcome.com and Pet-Friendly-Hotels.net are great resources to help you make your evacuation destination plans without having to leave your pets behind.
