The Importance of  Year 'Round Heartworm Prevention

Did You Know?

  • Thousands of dogs die each year from complications relating to heartworm disease.
  • Heartworms is a disease that every dog can contract.
  • One bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes for your pet to become infected with heartworms.
  • Heartworm Disease is almost 100% preventable.
The excuse "my pet only goes outside to potty and then comes right in" is not valid when determining whether or not your dog should be given heartworm preventative.  Mosquitoes can come through ANY open door or window, often in the matter of a second, and so your dog can be bitten inside your home just as easily as outside.

Mosquitoes can also hatch anytime there is standing water - even in the middle of winter.  So it is vital for the health and life of your dog that you treat your dog every month of the year.
Talk to your vet about heartworm prevention and what products would work best for your pet.

Happy New Year!

December turned out to be a busy month for CSTR despite not taking any new dogs into the program.  Our Gabrielle had her surgery, Hope and her puppies continue to thrive and several of our foster dogs found their forever homes for the holidays.  We have had several dogs boarding at our vet while we waited for foster spots to open up, so we were glad to have some adoptions completed so that they could get into new foster homes.

As I look back over 2010, I am so proud of everything that CSTR has accomplished!  We brought 85 dogs into our program this year and placed 76 in their forever homes, a video of which has been created as a thank you to our adopters and supporters.

The CSTR board of directors offers our sincerest thanks to everyone who had a part in helping CSTR make such an incredible difference in the lives of so many dogs in 2010.  We couldn't do any of this without you!  As we move into 2011, though, so many more dogs need us, and so we continue to need you.  Please.. if you can help by donating, please do, and if you've been thinking about fostering or volunteering, we'd love to have you!

Thank you so much, and please remember.. the dogs need us, and so in turn, we need you.

Our Gabrielle had surgery on both of her front legs on December 16, 2010.  Thank you SO much to everyone who donated so that she could have the surgery completed.  According to the orthopedic surgeon, the surgery went very well, and Gabrielle is now recovering in her foster home.  She has her first follow up with the surgeon next week but seems to be healing very well and is beginning to use both front legs again.
Hope and Puppies Update
Hope Destiny and Kelsee
Destiny, Kelsee and Hope

Hope and her puppies, Destiny and Kelsee, continue to thrive, and we are enjoying very much being able to share pictures of the puppies via our Facebook page each week as they get older.

The girls are now 6 weeks of age and are eating solid food and nursing much less frequently, and so as a result, Hope has been able to begin treatment for the Demodex mange.  We were very happy to hear from our vet when the puppies went in for their first set of vaccinations that they show no signs of having contracted the mange, themselves.  We will continue to update about them as they get older.  They will be spayed at 16 weeks of age and will be considered adoptable once that is completed.
