President's Message

It's amazing how much things can change in the space of one month!

CSTR has been extremely busy during the month of October.  Intakes increased dramatically, vet bills increased exponentially, and we lost a valiant little fighter who has left a hole in the hearts of everyone who met him.

Kyle
In Memory

We are very sorry to report that our sweet Kyle lost his fight earlier this month and crossed the Rainbow Bridge from the arms of his foster mom, Julie F.  Poor Kyle's battle was constant, and it became more than his little body could handle.  We would like to thank everyone who had a part in helping us care for this special little dog.  He will be greatly missed.

Adoptions
Oliver and Family

Chelsea and Family
CSTR saw six of our foster dogs find their forever homes in the month of September.  Chelsea, Oliver, Niko, Casper, Reuben and Teddy all were placed in new homes, and the reports we have received is that everyone is doing very well!

Intake
CSTR took in a total of 13 Shih Tzu into the foster program in the month of September.  10 came from Missouri puppy mills, 1 from the AntiCruelty Society of Chicago, and two are Kentucky puppy mill survivors that we took from another rescuer who is dealing with terminal illness in her family.

Breanna
As of the writing of this newsletter, seven of the Missouri mill Shih Tzu are settling into the new lives in Illinois.  Breanna, Madison, Kaitlyn and Travis were the first to go to their foster homes and are now working on socialization, housetraining, and preparing for new lives in the forever homes we know are out there for them.

Whitney went to her foster home a week later after having her eye removed due to severe glaucoma. Sydney and Kennedy are still in the hospital as Kennedy recovers from surgery on both knees.  The worst news we received from this group of dogs is that Sydney has a very aggressive form of mammary cancer and so will spend the duration of her life as a participant in CSTR's Refuge program.

Francine
Lhasa Apso mix, Francine, was picked up as a stray in Chicago and found herself at the AntiCruelty Society of Chicago.  At 8 years old with obvious eye "issues", she was deemed unadoptable, and CSTR was contacted to take her into our program.  5 year old Jaspar and 3 year old Heather are Kentucky puppy mill survivors who lived their lives in rabbit cages until the puppy mill owner decided that she didn't want to have the two blind dogs anymore.  These sweet babies are blind due to birth defects, and so medications nor surgery are needed.  They are just learning about life

Jaspar and Heather joined the three other dogs from the Missouri mills in CSTR's new program in Tallahassee, FloridaAidan, Roxanne and Mandy made the trip to their new southern foster home and are settling in and ready to enjoy the gorgeous summers and mild winters of their new home state.  This new program is just getting started and so will begin accepting adoption applications once these new dogs are ready for new homes.  CSTR also has a new CSTR Florida Petfinder web site where they will posted once they are ready to go!  CSTR will be accepting adoption applications from individuals within a 75 mile radius of Tallahassee.

Donations/Help Needed
With this influx of new dogs into the program, several with significant health issues, the ever present need for donations continues to grow.  If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.  Donations may be made via PayPal by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of this email or by sending a check made payable to CSTR to our address at -

We are also currently holding a Tastefully Simple fundraiser until October 15 to help raise money for our vet fund.  So if you would like to buy some special items in preparation for the holidays that are coming, be sure to place your order so that you can help the CSTR Shih Tzu at the same time.  And please.. forward it to your friends!

We also still need foster homes, both in Illinois and northwest Indiana, as well as in Tallahassee, FL, so if you are thinking about fostering, please consider this..  CSTR provides as much or as little assistance as you need.  All vet bills are paid by CSTR, and we will provide heartworm and flea preventative as well as dog food, if needed, also.  So if cost is all that is holding you back, please do not let it stop you from getting involved as a foster parent.

If you are not able to foster but would like to get involved, we can use your help, too!  There are many things that we need assistance with other than fostering, so if you have a knack for fundraising or like talking on the phone or have other talents, please visit our Foster/Volunteer page and submit an application today!  We need foster homes and volunteers in Tallahassee as we build the new program, so if you would like to help, let us know!

Be sure to keep an eye on the CSTR calendar to keep up on where you can come out to meet the CSTR foster dogs and our fabulous volunteers.  The Tallahassee events will be held at PetSmart on Capital Circle NE and will be posted on the calendar as soon as the Florida foster dogs are ready to meet the public.

Thank you, everyone.  As always, the dogs need us and so we need you.
