The Monthly Newsletter of Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue July 2010

President's Message June turned out to be a challenging month for CSTR. A shortage of foster homes meant that our intake was much smaller than in previous months, despite a long list of dogs needing to come into our program. Vet bills continued to accumulate, though, as Refuge program participants Kyle and Gage battled significant health issues. (See below for an update on Kyle.)
The downturn in the economy continues to affect nonprofits in the form of decreased donations, but it has also affected rescues, CSTR included, in that fewer people are willing to foster which directly affects how many dogs we can take in at a time. If you are thinking about fostering, though, please consider this.. CSTR provides as much or as little assistance as you need. All vet bills are paid by CSTR, and we will provide heartworm and flea preventative as well as dog food, if needed, also. So if cost is all that is holding you back, please do not let it stop you from getting involved as a foster parent.
If you are not able to foster but would like to get involved, we can use your help, too! There are many things that we need assistance with other than fostering, so if you have a knack for fundraising or like talking on the phone, or have other talents, please visit our Foster/Volunteer page and submit an application today!

New Dogs
It was a slow month for intake for CSTR, unfortunately, as we saw a decrease in the number of available foster openings despite so many adoptions last month. We are currently desperate for foster homes, so if you have been thinking about opening your home - and heart - to a homeless Shih Tzu, Shih Tzu mix or other small dog, please visit our web site today to complete the foster application.
We took in three dogs this month. 13 year old white female Poodle renamed Pearl had been surrendered by her owners to South Suburban Humane Society and was slated for euthanasia due to her age. CSTR definitely has a heart for special needs dogs, though, so we have brought her into our program and hope that eventually we will be able to find her a forever home of her own. Next came 2 year old Frankie, a black and white Shih Tzu, and 7 year old Brandon, a gold Shih Tzu, both from Kankakee, IL's animal control. Frankie and Brandon came in within the last 24 hours, so we are still assessing them.
To see the other dogs that CSTR has for adoption, be sure to visit the "Our Dogs" page of our web site.
And if you are interested in adopting, please visit our Adopt Page!

Kyle Update
Thank you to EVERYONE who has donated to help with Kyle's medical bills. Unfortunately, he suffered another set back this month as his ear infections flared back up and then his liver functions decreased pretty dramatically. At the time of the posting of this newsletter, we are still unsure as to what has caused Kyle's liver values to skyrocket and hope that the current course of treatment will help bring them back down.
The rehab treatments, though, have made a significant difference, and Kyle continues to improve and grow stronger. We still need financial help as the treatments cost, roughly, $400 each month, in addition to the tests, ultrasound and medications to treat the liver condition. So if you can help out, please visit CSTR's Donate page or click one of the buttons at the bottom of this newsletter to make a tax deductible donation. Thank you!
