The Monthly Newsletter of Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue May 2010

Happy May! Spring is (hopefully!) finally here! And with the coming of spring comes a newsletter format change for CSTR. As our email list has gotten larger and larger, we have had to deal with more and more problems with our messages being tagged as "Spam" by certain domains. So in order to avoid this, we have signed up with Constant Contact's email marketing program to deliver our messages and monthly newsletter. But while the format is a bit different, the purpose and message are still the same. CSTR is overwhelmed as always with the number of Shih Tzu, Shih Tzu mixes and other small breed dogs already in our program and still waiting to get into rescue. We had to do some "foster shuffling" this month and so unfortunately wound up with fewer open foster home spots than we had hoped and so were not able to help as many dogs as we would have liked. If you have been thinking about opening your home - and heart - to a needy dog, we desperately need YOU.
It has been a rough month for a couple of the dogs in our program, unfortunately, Kyle continues to improve, for the most part, and it was a joyous day for his foster mom the day he hopped up on the couch by himself. Many people wonder how a dog with no eyes could possibly have the chance at a good quality of life, and Kyle is proving every day that it is indeed possible. He continues to struggle with ear infections, though, and this month it has been a case of several steps forward and then a dramatic step back. But we are hopeful that the infections will be under control soon so that Kyle can begin the search for a forever home of his own.
It was a rough month for two of our other Refuge dogs, as well, as we saw Faith continue to battle kidney disease and Penelope diagnosed with an aggressive form of mammary cancer. It breaks our hearts to see these dogs go through so much after surviving puppy mills and finally having a chance at a new and better life.
It has definitely been a month of increased vet bills, so many, many thanks to everyone who participated in our "Eat Free for a Week" raffle, from the volunteers who pounded the pavement selling tickets to those of you who purchased them The drawing is tomorrow, and so we will announce the winner in the June 1 newsletter. We have had a great response to it and have raised some much-needed funds to go toward are rather hefty vet bill balance. We plan to have several more fundraisers over the summer, so please, watch this newsletter for ways that you can participate.
And to end this President's Message on a happy note, we were thrilled to receive updates this month on a couple sets of our puppies who passed their first birthdays recently. For updated pictures of Daisy's 8 and the Homer Glen puppy mill puppies, be sure to visit our Puppies Update page.
Thank you again to all of you who continue to encourage and support CSTR and our mission. As I ask every month, if you can give, please do. The dogs need us and so, as always, we need you.

 New Dogs
CSTR brought only two dogs into the program this month. 5 month old Toby, a Maltese, was picked up on the streets of a southern Illinois town. How someone could lose such a gorgeous little boy is completely beyond us! He is an adorable, friendly little fellow who enjoys his foster siblings as well as his foster mom.
Jameson, 8 years old, was surrendered to a Quincy, IL animal shelter after his elderly owners were forced to move into an assisted living facility. He is a friendly, rather portly guy who walks well on a leash and is quite active. Jameson would be a great companion for anyone who wants a companion who can take walks when you want to or who is just content to hang out with you and watch TV.

 Puppies Update
Wendy's puppies are now 8 weeks of age, have had their second set of booster shots and are being spayed/neutered today. It's amazing how fast these two months have gone and how quickly they have grown! Our "Puppy Shower" is next Saturday, May 8th, at Tucker's Doggie Delights in New Lenox, and then they will be going to their new homes shortly thereafter. Mom, Wendy, is still looking for a forever home of her own, so if you are looking for a friendly, affectionate "Velcro" dog, she's your girl!

Patrick | And in case you are wondering, Dad, Patrick,is still looking for a forever home, also! So if you are interested in adopting a laid back, happy go lucky guy who gets along with everyone, walks well on a leash and loves to ride in the car, click on his name or picture and check out Patrick today!
We are also VERY excited to share another puppy update - this one of Daisy's puppies as well as our Homer Glen puppies from 2009. All 10 puppies are now a year old, and we are thrilled to be able to share their updated pictures on our Puppy Update page of the CSTR web site.
