Network Roundtables Announced

As you all know, we are in the midst of several significant changes at PA CleanWays as we  become the new Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.  We are developing the new board and a new brand, including a new website which will all be unveiled at the Annual Meeting on October 27. Additionally,  we are redefining our mission and core focus areas to better reflect the outcome we are working to achieve- clean and beautiful communities. We are also revising our operating and governance structures to meet the needs of the organization moving forward.

I would like to invite you and your advisory board/team members to attend one of three roundtables we have scheduled over the next several weeks. The goal is to share with you updated information on the merger and subsequent changes in advance of the Annual Meeting which is when some of them will be formally adopted. I would like to thank PA CleanWays of Elk County, PA CleanWays of Huntingdon County and Westmoreland Cleanways for agreeing to host these roundtables.  I truly appreciate it.

Below are the meeting times and locations that you can share with your team. I ask that you please RSVP to Barb Smerkar at bsmerkar@pacleanways.org or 877-772-3673. Please tell her which one you plan to attend and the names of those attending. We want to be sure we have enough seating available. For those of you that are unable to attend, the information will be posted on the network login page of our website and we can discuss over the phone if you wish.

International Coastal Cleanup
PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is proud to partner with the Ocean Conservancy for the 25th annual International Coastal Cleanup, an event that brings together hundreds of thousands of volunteers from countries all over the world to remove everything from food wrappers and fishing supplies to tires and appliances from our beaches and waterways. Because trash travels to the ocean by way of storm drains and waterways, cleanups are also coordinated inland, along lakes, streams, and rivers. Be a part of the world's most astounding grassroots cleanup effort and join us on September 25th as we help coordinate cleanups in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia counties. Contact Michelle Dunn at mdunn@pacleanways.org or 877-772-3673. For information about cleanups in Erie County contact Don Benczkowski of DEP's Coastal Resources Management Program at 814-217-9634 or dbenczkows@state.pa.us. For assistance in coordinating or participating in events in all other counties in Pennsylvania, contact Leni Herr, statewide coordinator, at 610-451-9058. For more information about ICC Day go to www.oceanconservancy.org.

Cleanup Safety
PA CleansWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful was alerted to a new explosive prank, a bomb made from Drain-O and tin foil mixed together in a plastic bottle. The chemical reaction creates a volatile build up of gases that detonates the bottle with a force enough to severe fingers. The chemicals can cause 2nd and 3rd degree burns and can possibly cause blindness.

If you come accross bottles with liquid in it that shows signs of swelling or melting, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Call 911.
Chapter Grants Awarded
PA CleanWays of Fayette County received a grant of $1,000 from their local Wal-Mart store for cleanups.

PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful received a $4,000 Anheuser-Busch grant from Keep America Beautiful for cleanups in Allegheny and Washington counties.

PA CleanWays of Royal Gardens in Morris Park - West Philadelphia received a grant for $4,720 from Comcast for chapter activities.

PA CleanWays of Venango County received a grant of $250 from their local Wal-Mart store to help with cleanup expenses.

Scholarship Winner Announced
PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful would like to congratulate Joy Best, age 17, from Buxmont Christian Educational Institute in Philadelphia, who was chosen as the $1,000 Sue Wiseman Scholarship recipient.  Joy designed, developed, and implemented an Environmental Awareness Festival for the purpose of engaging and involving urban youth about the importance of caring for the environment. In its second year the festival, held on Earth Day, was a mix of exhibits and activities centered around solar energy, water protection, recycling, and proper disposal. Joy partnered with the local library and elementary school, as well as students ages 9 to 11 who helped with the day's festivities. Joy's goal is to reach out to other youth based organizations to help grow the Environmental Awareness Festival.

Applicants were judged on initiative and self-motivation, ability to demonstrate leadership, commitment to the environment, use of local resources, partnerships formed, and the project's ability to educate the public. PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful extends many thanks to a panel of judges including: Sue Wiseman, founder of PA CleanWays;
Richard Ebeling, Manager, Highway Beautification Program for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Board Member; and Timothy Savisky, Professor of Biology at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Board Member.

Nature Explore Toolkits
Through Keep America Beautiful, the PA CleanWays - Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network has access to Nature Explore Program kits. This kit responds to the need for connecting young children with nature through a multifaceted program that provides educators and families with comprehensive resources to create innovative ways to get children outdoors, connect them with nature, and inspire them to appreciate the living world. These kits are available for loan by contacting Heidi Pedicone at hpedicone@pacleanways.org or 724-836-4121 ext. 109.
