| Greetings!
Welcome to the new format of CleanWays Happenings. We moved to this electronic format to make it easier to circulate information to you with direct links to websites, programs, and individuals. We hope that you find this format easier to read and to use.
If there is someone on your Advisory Board that does not have an e-mail account, please forward this information to them. If there is anyone that you wish to add to the list to receive this electronic newsletter, please contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@pacleanways.org. |

PA CleanWays and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Merger Update
Sue Smith, National Education Director for Keep America Beautiful, joined PA CleanWays-Keep PA Beautiful for a Grassroots Roundtable on March 2 in State College. Her presentation included an overview of the national organization and its vast and diverse network. She demonstrated how chapters and affiliates in PA can now take advantage of the tools and resources that are aligned with Keep America Beautiful's three focus areas including litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling, and community greening and beautification. Over 30 of our network representatives were in attendance. While the majority of our chapters and affiliates will not directly affiliate with the national organization as Keep America Beautiful affiliates, the state organization will continue to serve as a conduit for these programming tools and resources for your local efforts. While there is still much work to be done, we have begun to lay the framework for an all inclusive grassroots network in Pennsylvania under one governance body, speaking with one voice, and working towards a common goal, to keep Pennsylvania beautiful. If you have questions regarding the merger, please give us a call!

Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania 2010 Great American Cleanup of PA
The 2010 Great American Cleanup of PA will once again start on March 1st and continue through May 31st. In partnership with PA CleanWays-Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Keep America Beautiful, the Department of Environmental Protection, and PennDOT, this three month event offers many resources to groups that want to clean up the Commonwealth. As in previous years, coordinators of registered events will be able to get gloves, vests, and bags from local PennDOT District offices. The Let's Pick It Up PA - Everyday aspect of this event will occur April 17th through May 1st, with the focus day being April 24th. It is during this two week period that registered events can dispose of their trash collected from cleanups at participating landfills free of charge. All 67 counties in Pennsylvania were represented in the Great American Cleanup of PA in 2009. Help us continue the trend and register your spring event today by going to www.gacofpa.org or contacting Michelle Dunn at 877-772-3673 or mdunn@pacleanways.org.

Litter Free School Zone
The Litter Free School Zone program is designed to encourage students to keep their school grounds, campus, and neighborhood litter-free, and to raise public awareness regarding litter via a Litter Free School Zone sign to be displayed outside the school.
Students, clubs, classes, and even entire school districts can participate in the Litter Free School Zone program. Keeping their school litter-free is an easy and fun way for students to work together, learning valuable community leadership and responsibility skills while gaining a respect for the environment and the world around them. It is also an opportunity to develop a school-wide stewardship ethic and set a community example.
Please help us promote this program. If your chapter or affiliate would like a sign to take with you to speaking engagements or to exhibit at local conferences contact Susan Carmichael at 877-772-3673 ext. 107 or scarmichael@pacleanways.org. Visit our website for more information about the program. |
Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors Convention PA CleanWays-Keep PA Beautiful Presenting
PA CleanWays-Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will be staffing a display booth at the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) Annual Convention and Trade Show April 18th through 20th in Hershey. This conference typically attracts over 3,700 township officials from around the Commonwealth. It is a great opportunity for PA CleanWays-Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to advertise our network, programs, services, and mission. You can spread the word in a similar fashion at the local level. Every county township supervisor association also has an annual meeting for their supervisors. As we have done in the past, we encourage each affiliate and chapter to contact their township supervisor to find out when this annual meeting occurs and to try and get the opportunity to give a presentation on PA CleanWays and the work your affiliate or chapter is doing in that county. To get a list of county association officers and county convention dates, please visit www.psats.org. |
