State employees, teachers face big premium hikes

By Andy Miller

Georgia teachers, other school personnel, state employees and retirees will face an average hike in their health insurance premiums of 9.5 percent in January, though some will get an increase of up to 30 percent, state officials said Thursday.

The Department of Community Health also said at an agency board meeting that Medicaid will have budget cuts of $60 million this fiscal year and $100 million in fiscal 2014, but that it is aiming not to reduce payments to medical providers.

State Medicaid Program Facing $415 Million Deficit for 2013

By JONATHAN SHAPIRO

To help close its budget deficit, the board of the Department of Community Health voted to  increase premium payments for state employees by 9.5 percent.

For the agency, the measure will likely be the first of many.

In addition to state employee plans, DCH oversees Peachcare for Kids, the state health plan for children, and Medicaid, the program for the needy. Medicaid alone is running a $350 million deficit heading into 2013. Add that to a state-ordered three percent cut and Medicaid will have to find more than $415 million in revenue for next year.

Rural Hospitals Revived

I propose that hospitals try to keep all the people in their communities healthy.

We've known for decades that we should be paying more attention to preventing disease, yet very little has actually been done. If we want to save money on health care we should be keeping people from getting sick, but treating heart disease pays very well. Preventing it doesn't.
