Application Available for 2012 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is accepting applications for the 2012 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program. This summer program provides college students with an opportunity to work on policy issues in a congressional office and to learn about other organizations and agencies involved in health policy. The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program is open to individuals with a strong interest in eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens who will be either a senior at or a recent graduate of an accredited 4-year college or university in the fall of 2012. Individuals with a graduate degree and those individuals currently enrolled in a graduate degree program are not eligible to participate. The application deadline is 5 p.m. ET on Friday, December 16, 2011. Application materials and more information are available online at http://bjordanscholars.kff.org/. |

Health isn't just a personal choice, it's a community asset

The importance of health and wellness is the baseline for all of today's hot-button issues: regional economic development, work force development, education, quality of life and, of course, the rising costs of health care.
Georgia has the second-highest childhood obesity rate in the nation. While our southern region lends us to some of the best farms for fresh produce and favorable climate for outdoor activity, our alarming obesity epidemic and the chronic diseases that come with it are raising the cost and burden on our health care system to an insurmountable burden that will negatively affect generations to come.

State Medicaid Spending Skyrockets

The end of federal stimulus spending is going to mean nothing but pain for state Medicaid programs in fiscal 2012. State Medicaid spending is projected to grow by an average of 29 percent in the budget year that began July 1, the biggest increase in the history of the federal-state health insurance program for the poor and disabled, according to a report released Thursday.
