Dear GRHA Members,
Hope everyone is having a great summer and finding ways to stay cool.
Things are heating up with GRHA and I wanted to provide you an update. Since this past January our organizational membership has grown from 159 to 183. Thank you for all your help.
In May we had our first and quite successful Rural Health Clinic Conference in Cordele. The event was held at the South Georgia Technical College with over 60 in attendance.
Speakers included the following: Rhett Partin, Georgia Hospital Association, Director of the Center for Rural Health - potential impact of the Affordable Care Act on Rural Health Clinics; Cindy Dupree, Draffin & Tucker - Accountable Care Organizations impact on Rural Health Clinics; Charles Horne, Draffin Tucker - Cost Reporting; Teresa McMillan, MAG Mutual - Risk Management; Dr. Dominick Mack, Morehouse School of Medicine - Electronic Health Records and Meaningful Use; Paula Guy, Georgia Partnership for Telehealth - Telemedicine; Melody Brown, Georgia Medical Care Foundation - QI and implementing QA performance measures; Charles Owens, Director of the State Office of Rural Health - Rural Health Clinic Assistance; Lana Dennis, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - CMS Update; and Donna Crews, Director of the State Office of Primary Care - Primary Care Office Programs specific to RHCs.
Pam Reynolds, with the Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center, had staff professionally video record the day which can be viewed on our website. To build on this momentum, plans are in the works to provide a Rural Health Clinic Track at the annual conference.
Speaking of our Annual Conference, this year we are looking forward to gathering at beautiful Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain Georgia September 19-21st. Register before Augusta 20th and get a better room rate! We are working on a great agenda and have already lined up State Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens to speak with us on Tuesday, September 20th at 3:00 pm on the impact of the Affordable Care Act for rural Georgia. More speaker confirmations will be announced soon. But in the meantime, if you are interested in submitting an abstract for a speaker session, please go to www.grhainfo.org and follow the instructions. A formal conference agenda should be release the middle of July.
Sincerely,

July is UV Safety Month! Summer is the perfect time to remind viewers about the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet
(UV) radiation, and how to protect themselves in the sun. Learn more about UV Safety and find the UV forecast at
EPA's SunWise Program Web site - www.epa.gov/sunwise.
How does UV radiation affect you?
Overexposure to UV radiation has negative health effects which range from short-term effects, such as sunburns, to long-term affects, such as skin cancer. Every year in the United States over one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer and as a result of skin cancer, one person dies every hour. Over exposure to UV radiation can also cause eye cataracts, eye damage, skin aging, growths on the skin, and suppression of the immune system.
Who is at risk?
Although the sun can adversely affect everyone, some people are at a higher risk for skin cancer when overexposed to UV radiation. People who are at the highest risk for skin cancer are those who spend excessive amounts of time in the sun, as well those who get sun burns easily or frequently. Even though the risk of skin cancer is not equal for all people, everyone should take precautions. It is also important to remember that everyone is equally at risk for eye damage due to overexposure to the sun's ultra violet radiation.
