National Rural Health Association

Rural America faces a looming health professions workforce crisis. Recruiting and retaining physicians in rural areas is significantly more difficult than in urban areas. This is why Title VII programs, such as area health education centers (AHECs), are essential for increasing the health care workforce in rural America.

In its FY 2012 budget request, HRSA has identified the Title VII health professions programs as a national priority, and we encourage you do to the same.

Attached please find a sample letter to send to your senators in support of AHEC funding. These letters must be received by Friday, June 10, as the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies has a Friday deadline for voiced support.

Please let your senators know how important this funding is, and ask them to voice their support to Senators Harkin and Shelby.

If you have any questions about AHECs or this letter, contact David Lee, NRHA government affairs and policy manager, at dlee@NRHArural.org.

Atlanta Medical becomes area's second Level I Trauma Center

Georgia's struggling trauma care system scored a win this week with Atlanta Medical Center becoming metro Atlanta's second Level I trauma facility, which treats the most severely injured patients.

The downtown Atlanta hospital's new Level I status is the culmination of years of effort -- adding new equipment, more specialty surgeons and larger operating rooms, said trauma coordinator Rochella Mood. With roughly 2,200 trauma cases annually, it's the region's second such facility, alongside Grady Memorial Hospital.

The hospital's move to Level I is a plus for Atlanta residents with the rapidly growing metro area in need of a second trauma center, said Kevin Bloye, spokesman for the Georgia Hospital Association.

Still, the state's poorly funded trauma system continues to deal with a lack of facilities -- especially throughout large swaths of rural Georgia -- and an overall trauma death rate above the national average. While the state has 18 trauma centers, some experts say it should have as many as 30 to ensure residents are within an hour of one.

CMS Announces National Version 5010 Testing Days

Wed June 15 and Wed Aug 24

 CMS

The Version 5010 compliance date - Sun Jan 1, 2012 - is fast approaching.  All HIPAA-covered entities should be taking steps now to get ready, including conducting external testing to ensure timely compliance.  Are you prepared for the transition?  Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) trading partners are encouraged to contact their Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) now and facilitate testing to gain a better understanding of MAC testing protocols and the transition to Version 5010.

To assist in this effort, CMS, in conjunction with the Medicare FFS Program, announces National 5010 Testing Days to be held Wed June 15 and Wed Aug 24, 2011.  The National 5010 Testing Days are an opportunity for trading partners to come together and test compliance efforts that are already underway with the added benefit of real-time help desk support and direct and immediate access to MACs.

CMS encourages all trading partners to participate in the National 5010 Testing Days.  This includes:

§  Providers;

§  Clearinghouses; and

§  Vendors

We hope all trading partners will join us on Wed June 15 and Wed Aug 24 and take advantage of this great opportunity to ensure testing and transition efforts are on track!  For more information on HIPAA Version 5010, please visit http://www.CMS.gov/Versions5010andD0.

White House Rural Council

The Obama Administration has established the first White House Rural Council and named access to affordable health care among the council's top priorities.

NRHA is pleased the White House is focused on improving the lives of the 62 million Americans who call rural home.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will chair the new advisory team working toward bettering the economic outlook and quality of life for rural residents.

The council will make recommendations for investment in rural areas and will coordinate federal engagement with a variety of rural stakeholders, including organizations, small businesses and state, local and tribal governments.
