LIVESTRONG COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT

LIVESTRONG has selected four model programs available for replication. While diverse in their support, these four programs share a common theme of providing support in innovative ways along with supporting often underserved communities. This year's selected programs were chosen based on the needs of the cancer community along with requests made by constituents.

NRHA is pleased to announce a ORHP funding opportunity through the HIT Grant Program

The Office of Rural Health Policy is pleased to announce the release of the Rural Health Information Technology (HIT) Grant Program (HRSA-11-137).

HIT is critically important for rural communities, and while a lot of the early innovation in the use of electronic records and HIT networks was done in rural communities, many challenges still remain. This pilot program was developed as a result of the president's Rural Health Initiative, which identifies HIT as a priority area, and the secretary's Rural HIT Taskforce. To address these and other HIT issues, Secretary Sebelius established an HHS Rural HIT task force co-led by HRSA Administrator Dr. Mary Wakefield and the Office of the National Coordinator. The purpose of the taskforce is to discuss the challenges rural communities face in adopting HIT, ways to address these challenges and how to coordinate resources from the federal level. One of the major challenges that the taskforce has identified is access to capital, and ORHP anticipates that this program will assist rural communities in addressing this challenge.

Due to the unique broadness and flexibility of the 330a authorization, ORHP had a great opportunity to develop this grant program in response to these initiatives. The rural HIT program was developed out of the Network Development Program legislation (330a authority), keeping the focus on rural networks.

To download the funding opportunity, follow the links below:

The deadline to submit an application is May 27. ORHP strongly recommends that applicants submit their applications prior to the due date to avoid any technological problems. All applications have to be submitted electronically at www.grants.gov.

There will be a technical assistance call for this funding announcement on May 10 at 2 p.m. EST. The toll-free call-in number is 888-577-8992, and the passcode is HIT. For your reference, the technical assistance call will be recorded and available for playback until June 10. The number to hear the recorded call is 866-420-5718.

For further questions on this funding opportunity, contact the program coordinator, Marcia Green, at 301-443-3261 or

CDC Report Highlights Lack of Healthy Food Enviroments for Children

More support needed in communitites, child care facilities and schools

States can do more to improve food access, regulations and policies to promote healthy eating and fight childhood obesity, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 2011 Children's Food Environment State Indicator Report also notes that the communities, child care facilities and schools all have roles to play.

The report shows that as of December 2008, only one state-Georgia-had enacted all of the following state licensure regulations for child care facilities: to restrict sugar drinks, to require access to drinking water throughout the day, and to limit TV and computer screen time. CDC and other experts see the childcare setting as an important opportunity to address nutrition and physical activity issues.

Twenty-nine states had enacted one of these regulations, while 13 states and the District of Columbia had enacted none.
