Dear Georgia Rural Health Association Members,
Rural Health Day is right around the corner on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Activities and breakfast will begin at 8:00 am in the South Wing of the state Capitol in Atlanta. Please make plans to come and speak with Georgia's state lawmakers who are responsible for legislation that impacts your profession and community.
All the members of the General Assembly have received an invitation but you are encouraged to personally invite your State Senator and State Representative to attend what is sure to be a great day for rural health. After all, they want to hear from their constituents. To find your legislator and contact information, click here.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you on Wed, February 16th.
Sincerely,
Matt Caseman
Executive Director, GRHA |

A new policy brief is available from the RUPRI Center: Medicare Beneficiary Access to Primary Care Physicians--Better in Rural, but Still Worrisome.
Primary care is the foundation of the rural U.S. health care system. Thus, the willingness of rural primary care physicians to accept new Medicare patients is critically important to the Medicare program and to rural America's elderly. In this policy brief, results from a large national physician survey are used to assess (1) U.S. primary care physician and general surgeon willingness to accept Medicare patients and (2) physician-reported reasons for not accepting Medicare patients.

Assistance for Rural Health Clinics
The federal Office of Rural Health Policy, part of the Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, supports technical assistance (TA) calls and a listserve to assist Rural Health Clinics throughout the nation. The TA calls and the listserve are maintained by the National Association of Rural Health Clinics. RHCs and others interested in RHC work can sign up for the free calls and listserve.
To sign up for the calls and the listserve, go to the Office of Rural Health Policy web site - http://www.hrsa.gov/ruralhealth/ See Policy and Research in the middle of the page and click on RHC Technical Assistance Conference Call Series. http://www.hrsa.gov/ruralhealth/policy/confcall/index.html
This listserve and the calls are important sources of information for RHCs, as well as for practices considering becoming an RHC. Additional information about that call follows.
Many rural health clinics, small rural hospitals or critical access hospitals have many patients who are uninsured. Sometimes these uninsured patients cannot afford insurance because they have little or no income even though they are relatively healthy. But sometimes they have a medical condition that causes them to be classified as "high-risk," making the cost of health insurance prohibitive or making the individual "uninsurable." As part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Congress authorized the Department of Health and Human Services to establish - either in conjunction with the states or independently - an insurance program for so-called "high-risk" individuals. The program, called the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan, is now available.
The National Association of Rural Health Clinics (NARHC) and the federal Office of Rural Health Policy have arranged for representatives from the new federal Office of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight to discuss this new program as part of the Rural Health Clinic Technical Assistance series.
