Straight Talk for Seniors on Health Reform
from the National Council on Aging
If you're like millions of Americans, you're not sure how health reform will affect you, your family and friends, and our nation. The debate has been long, hard fought, and often confusing. It's difficult to know what information is unbiased and fair-and what is just political spin.

NCOA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit service and advocacy organization. We have a 40-year history of helping older adults understand complex programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. We advocated for the passage of Medicare in 1965 and for adding prescription drug coverage in 2003. We've spent years helping older adults understand how to access their benefits. When it comes to health reform, our goal is to give you the straight facts.
The facts presented here are from the new health reform law-the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act. We encourage you to read these facts and share them widely with others.

5 Straight Facts on Health Reform
National Fireworks Safety Month
June 1 - July 4
Prevent Blindness America wants all
Americans to know the dangers of consumer
fireworks. The U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission reports the following
fireworks injury statistics:

· Fireworks devices were involved in an
estimated 9,200 injuries treated in U.S.
hospital emergency rooms in 2006 (the
latest year for which data is available).

· An estimated 6,400 injuries were treated
in hospital emergency rooms during the
one-month period (June 16-July 16)
surrounding the Fourth of July.

· Eyes were the second most commonly
injured part of the body, with an estimated
1,500 fireworks-related eye injuries treated
in the same one-month period of 2006.

· Firecrackers accounted for 20% of all
injuries followed by rockets (13%), and
sparklers (16%).

Best Practices Survey

GRHA is surveying communities across the state
to compile a database reflecting best practices
we all can use to improve rural health. Designed
with your time in mind, the components of the
brief survey include  who is offering the program,
what the program goals are, who the program serves, why it is offered, the impact it has in the community/state, and staff contact information.

Please click the Best Practices Survey under Quick Links at left.
