Dear South Middle River Resident
As President Lincoln said, "A house divided cannot stand", so let us all work together as the most cohesive neighborhood in the City of Fort Lauderdale this year! 2010 will bring major improvements to our park with playground equipment being installed, as well as a gazebo which is currently in the design phase. New lighting and sidewalks are on the way for NW 8th , sidewalks are coming, new many new trees and street signs. We will continue to work tirelessly with the City of Fort Lauderdale Code and Police Departments to eliminate crime and blight. We have a lot on our plate for this year but if you have a special project or concern in the neighborhood please come forward at a meeting or give me a call personally.
Our general meeting will continue to be held the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:45PM. Our neighborly meeting location will now be the Community Garden Recreation Room located at 501 NW 17 Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. We will continue to hold Police/Crime meetings with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Police substation located at 533 NE 13th Street. Please take the time to attend these important meetings, get to know your neighbors, renew your memberships, join a committee.................together we can continue to move South Middle River forward.
Yours, Jo Ann

What is 9-1-1? All public safety agencies in Broward County provide enhanced 9-1-1 service. Enhanced 9-1-1 delivers the calling telephone number, the location and the name of the person to whom the telephone number is listed. Presently the enhanced 9-1-1 information is only provided if the call is placed from a landline telephone. Caller information is not available from cellphones.
When to dial 9-1-1
9-1-1 is the number to dial for in-progress crimes or when a life and death emergency response is needed from the police or fire/rescue departments.
How do I know if it is an emergency?
Ask yourself if the police or fire/rescue departments are needed right now to protect life or property. If the answer is yes then dial 9-1-1.
9-1-1 Emergency Examples:
- Traffic accidents with injuries
- Structure Fires
- Life-threatening illness
- Child choking
- Someone breaking into your home now, or one of your neighbors' homes
- Shootings
- Fights or displays of weapons
When Not To Call 9-1-1:
A "Non-Emergency" call is simply a request for the service of Law Enforcement, Fire, or EMS personnel that is not a life or death situation. Examples are:
- Vandalism
- Barking dog
- Loud party
- "Minor" injuries
- Abandoned vehicle
- Delayed burglary or larceny where no culprit is on the scene
Non-emergency situations should be reported to 954-828-5700
What To Expect When Calling 9-1-1:
A 9-1-1 "Call Taker" will answer your call by identifying themselves and will then ask you to give the phone number from where you are calling. Our computer will quickly verify your correct address for the officer who is responding to your emergency call.
Even while you are talking, an officer is already on the way. Try to remain calm and answer all of the Call Taker's questions--we understand you may be excited.
DO NOT HANG UP!
For officer safety, it is very important that the Call Taker on the phone gets all the necessary information about the emergency and the suspects.
Give information most needed:
- Location of the emergency
- What happened
- specify what kind of emergency; police, fire or medical
- Keep the information factual. Tell the operator what you have seen or heard. Do not exaggerate the situation.
- Your name and telephone number
- When it happened
- Is anyone injured?
- Suspect description
- How many suspects?
- Vehicle description
- License number
- Direction of travel of suspect
- Did you see any weapons?
9-1-1 IS NOT FOR directory assistance or for emergency telephone repair!

South Middle River Pa Vle Fatra Nan Lari-a.
Anpil nan nou renmen fè piknik lakay nou epi tou envite zanmi lakay nou . Gen nan nou ki pentire kay nou bèl, plante pye bwa ak flè. Tout sa se bèl bagay! Nou dwe fyè de sa. Men tout bèl travay sa, se lave men siye atè si nou pa kanpe moun kap jete fatra nan lari a. Ki jan ou santi ou lè yon moun jete fatra devan pòt ou. Si yon moun vinn jete fatra devan pòt ou, ou pap kontan, pa vre? Ki sa ki merite pou fèt? An nou kòmanse yon vigilans katye pou mete fen nan problem sa. Chak fwa nou rapòte yon vyolasyon, lari a ap rete tou pwòp. Pa blye lari-a se salon pèp la. Tout moun renmen salon yo pwòp.

Driving Trash Out of our Neighborhood: South Middle River Say YES! Author: Pierre Suffrin
Care about making an impressionable statement about yourself? Yes, you can! You should if you share common values with a community of neighbors who pursue similar interests. Here at South Middle River we all agree that we want to live in a beautiful surrounding which showcases the best of us. That is probably why we buy or rent property in this neighborhood and more so that is one reason we plant trees, mow our lawns, paint our houses or apartments. We all relish the privilege of having a picnic in our backyard or front yard and we all feel proud to give our guests a tour of our homestead. What about treating our guests to dinner or brunch at home? Most probably, all of us have been there a thousand times. While you relive these emotional highs, you should pad yourself in the back for fulfilling your fondest dreams. Yet, these good times cannot last if the recent trends of dumping are not reversed. This is where we can all stand TALL and save our neighborhood from illegal dumping. Have you noticed someone dropping disposable trash in your front lawn? Did you wake up to discover your street or front yard littered with all sorts of debris? How did you feel? Not good! What can you do to prevent this? What about starting a "Neighborhood Watch" to protect our neighborhood from violators? Doing this will allow us to stay alert and spot a violation which, if it gets reported, would be corrected and as a result, our streets will look spot on. |
