Fellow Spotlight
Mayte

Mayte is a 2011 Fellow currently attending Baruch College.  She plans to major in International Business, and to minor in Marketing and French. Mayte is active on Baruch's campus as a peer mentor for the SEEK Program, as well as through her role as a NYNY Fellow Ambassador. This summer, Mayte will travel to China as a volunteer for Learning Enterprises.

Mentor Spotlight
Leleah

We are proud to recognize 2010 and 2012 Mentor Coach Leleah Robinson for her continued commitment to the NYNY community.  Leleah is a member of our inaugural 2010 class and recently signed on to serve as a Mentor Coach for another two years in our 2012 class.  Not only is she dedicated to supporting our Fellows, she is also committed to supporting her fellow Mentor Coaches.  Most recently, Leleah served as a facilitator at the 2012 class orientation and led breakout activities while sharing her perspective and experiences with the new class of Mentor Coaches.  We are fortunate to have Leleah as part of the NYNY family and are excited to continue working with her over the next two years - and beyond!

Dear friends of NYNY,

We began our summer by welcoming our new Class of Fellows and Mentor Coaches on June 9! It was an inspiring start to what will surely be an amazing two years for these new members of the NYNY Community. I am also proud to announce the new team members who lead our new Technology and Career Development Programs and a new addition to the Fellows Program team.

  • Marianna Tu: Marianna, a current Mentor Coach, joins us as Vice President of Technology and Career Development Programs. Marianna was most recently the New York Executive Director for Peer Health Exchange, a nonprofit focused on providing health education to low-income teenagers. She graduated from Harvard. Marianna will head the Technology and Career Development Programs, which will provide students at under-resourced colleges and community colleges with online and in-person professional networks, career exploration videos and panels, resume and cover letter workshops, and interview preparation assistance.
  • Ashley Prince: Ashley joins us as Technology and Career Development Programs Coordinator. Ashley was most recently a Business Analyst in the Equity Research division for Goldman Sachs, covering biotechnology. She graduated from Harvard. Ashley will work with Marianna to develop the Technology and Career Development Programs.
  • Ashley Garner: Ashley joins us as Fellows Program Training Coordinator. Ashley is a recent graduate of the University of Missouri, where she served as President of the Black Pre-Law Student Association and coordinated outreach programs to help in the retention and growth of MU's underrepresented ethnic minority population. Ashley will plan and coordinate Saturday workshops as well as provide programmatic support for Fellows.

We'd also like to welcome our interns on our Strategic Partnerships team!

  • Katherine Taketomo, Barnard College
  • Stephanie Ebanks, The City College of New York (Jeannette K. Watson Fellow)
  • Lindsay Schroeder, The University of Chicago (MBA)

We are so excited to work with all of them and they have already been great additions to the NYNY team.

Please continue reading for a number of updates, including information on Team NYNY and the ING Marathon. Also, thank you to 2011 Mentor Coach Melissa Kinckle, who recognized NYNY in a recent Chronicle of Philanthropy blog "How to Get Grants in a Down Economy." You can read it here!

Sincerely,

Team NYNY Set for ING Marathon!

Team NYNY is excited to announce the fifth and final member of the team: 2012 Mentor Coach Will Yu!  Will Yu joins the other members of Team NYNY, 2011 Mentor Coach Melissa Kinckle, 2010 Mentor Coach Nasir Qadree, 2010 Mentor Coach Keith Putnam-Delaney, and 2011 Mentor Coach Josh Weissenstein, who have a goal of raising $50,000 to support NYNY.  To support the runners or to join the team as a fund raiser, go to the Team NYNY fund raising page here!

Leading the team effort is NYNY Founder and Board President Robert Reffkin, who will be running his 50th marathon this November. This will be the culminating marathon in his five-year effort to run a marathon in every state to raise $1,000,000 for organizations that provide support and resources to help students achieve their goals, including NYNY.

Go to www.runningtosupportyoungdreams.com to check out his video and help Robert reach this ambitious goal.

NYNY Partners with 'wichcraft!

Food is a large workshop expense, so we are excited that 'wichcraft will provide discounted food at NYNY workshops! 'wichcraft & Riverpark are planning to host a BBQ fundraiser to benefit NYNY. 'wichcraft is also developing a special fall internship program for NYNY Fellows, which will be a great way for Fellows to learn about different parts of the restaurant business. Thank you, 'wichcraft!

Save the Date!
