Fellow Spotlight
Elena

Elena is a 2010 Fellow studying anthropology at Hunter College. Using anthropology, she hopes to better understand people and the societies they create. She is originally from Montebello, Colorado, and her move to New York City has helped to expand her dreams and strengthen her desire to learn. The knowledge Elena has gained from NYNY workshops will be useful in her internship at Black Women's Blueprint as a Human Rights Project Coordinator.

Mentor Spotlight
Larry

Larry Erwin is a 2011 Mentor Coach and a member of the Young Leadership Board. He is currently a Director at Proclivity Media. In addition to working closely with his Fellow, Mario, Larry has been a passionate supporter of introducing NYNY Fellows to career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). In December, Larry organized members of the NYC tech community for a ping pong tournament to raise money to buy netbooks for Fellows pursuing STEM majors and careers. In total, Larry raised nearly $2000 and was able to purchase five netbooks for our Fellows! We would like to thank Larry for his continued commitment to our program and unwavering enthusiasm and support of our Fellows. Thank you, Larry!

Dear friends of NYNY,

Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone in the NYNY community who contributed to our end of year giving campaign - your generosity has gotten us off to a great start in 2012! Another important key to NYNY's success is the idea that good folks know other good folks. So we're asking for your help again as we recruit our next class of Fellows and Mentor Coaches. Our applications are live!

Mentor Coach applications are due March 31st: http://www.newyorkneedsyou.org/apply/mentor-coach-application

Fellow applications are due March 15th:

There is nothing more important to us than getting the right people involved. Please feel free to reach out to us to recommend candidates by emailing fellows@newyorkneedsyou.org or volunteers@newyorkneedsyou.org. We'd also be happy to send you the text of sample emails you can send to your network. We hope you are as excited as we are to witness the growth and impact of New York Needs You!

In other news, we've kicked off January by celebrating National Mentoring Month! National Mentoring Month was created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership and has enjoyed strong support by the White House. We are also proud to announce that Venessa Mendenhall, our Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, and Allison Villapiano, our Volunteer Engagement Manager, are giving a presentation about the tremendous volunteer community we have built at NYNY during MENTOR's national summit in Washington, DC! I want to thank Mentor Coach Khalida Ali for being the first to let us know about this wonderful opportunity!

Sincerely,

PJ Kim

Battle of Silicon Alley for NYNY!

Fifty tech entrepreneurs and ping pong enthusiasts convened for a ping pong tournament at Slate on December 18, 2011 to raise funds for New York Needs You. 2011 Mentor Coach and NY Tech Ping Pong founder, Larry Erwin, organized the event which brought in nearly $2000 for the purchase of Google Chromebooks for NYNY Fellows interested in careers in STEM. A special thank you goes to Larry and all members of the NYNY community that came out for a fun afternoon!  If you have a fundraising idea, we can help! Please send an email to Matthew Schwieger (matthew.schwieger@newyorkneedsyou.org) and we will help you get started!
