Mentor Spotlight
Alana
Alana Gardner is an attorney, a 2011 Mentor Coach and an active volunteer at NYNY's office.  In addition to serving as an outstanding Mentor Coach to her Fellow, Brandon, Alana is helping NYNY start a virtual Career Coach network designed to connect Fellows to professionals across the country with highly specific industry experience and expertise.  Alana is also committed to expanding Brandon's professional network and has helped him secure not only one, but two, internships this year. Of Brandon, Alana says: "Of all the wonderful Fellows I could have been paired with, I'm so proud to be paired with Brandon. Strangely, we function like two peas in a pod and he brings out the best in me." We would like to thank Alana for her continued contributions and support!

Dear friends of NYNY,

The fall is a busy time for our community! Our Fellows are coming off the heels of their midterm exams and we are moving into our recruiting season. We have seen a renewed commitment from our partners - most recently, CUNY - to ensure that NYNY brings in another stellar class of Fellows. We are also focused on preparing our 2010 and 2011 Fellows for their fall, spring and summer internship opportunities. With the help of our Mentor Coaches, Career Coaches and volunteers, we have been able to give each Fellow individualized attention through mock interviews. Thank you all for your participation! Once again, you give our Fellows an edge by providing them with the critical feedback they can apply to any professional experience.

I'm also delighted to welcome Matthew Schwieger as NYNY's new Development Manager. Matthew was most recently a Development Associate at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  At NYNY, he provides strategic support to the Growth Strategy team, with a focus on foundations and 101% Society initiatives and events. Please be sure to welcome Matthew when you see him!

We continue to engage our community with specialized programming events.  A recent success is the MBA and Business School Summit hosted by the Mentor Leadership Council at Google's Manhattan headquarters. As we enter the season of Thanksgiving and the holidays, we are grateful that our volunteers aim to serve not only the Fellows, but each other and the entire NYNY community!

Sincerely,

PJ Kim

NYNY Hosts Fellow Recruiting Kickoff with CUNY!

NYNY officially began its Fellows Program recruiting season with the help of The City University of New York (CUNY) at a CUNY liaisons meeting on Tuesday, October 25th! NYNY Programs team members Chera Reid, Gabrielle Gazzola, LaShawnda Brooks, and NYNY Community College Initiative Vice President, Joe Pinto, gave an "engaging, well-put-together presentation", said Deborah Douglass, Executive Director for Education and Training Opportunity Programs, CUNY. The presentation included an NYNY overview, trivia and testimonies from some NYNY Fellows who currently attend CUNY schools. Thank you to 2011 Fellows Leslie, Sheryll and Iman, and 2010 Fellow Naithram for attending and sharing their NYNY experiences! More than 20 CUNY liaisons attended, many of whom were renewing their role as liaison from NYNY's last recruiting season. The liaisons shared best practices and many requested follow-up visits at their individual CUNY campuses. We look forward to building our relationship with CUNY throughout the recruiting season and beyond!

NYNY Partners with Barclays Capital!

NYNY is proud to partner with Barclays Capital!  Barclays has been a financial supporter of NYNY's 2010 and 2011 benefit dinners, and also selected NYNY as a Finalist for the Chairman's Award, a global philanthropy award.  Barclays has agreed to host NYNY Fellows at a Barclays Day in 2012, which will include a panel discussion and job shadowing.  Its Diversity Campus Recruiting has also committed to giving special attention to NYNY Fellows' applications.  At least 43 Barclays employees have been engaged in NYNY activities as donors and/or volunteers, including a Governing Board member, a Young Leadership Board member, 4 Mentor Coaches and 5 Career Coaches.  We are grateful for Barclays' commitment to NYNY!
