Life Is A Genetically Positive Gift, Live It Well
It is time for a Wholly Macro short story!! We like to share real life experiences from time to time, so here goes.
In the course of our day yesterday, our paths crossed that of a medical doctor and we began to chat.
Quite unexpectedly, during the course of conversation, the subject of my past brush with breast cancer came up.
I did not know this man at all or I am not sure I would have volunteered any info about myself. But, not knowing this man, and assuming (never assume), that he was on more or less the same wavelength as I,the subject of cancer came up, and I voluntarily stated that I had had breast cancer in 1996. This man / doctor zoomed right in on the topic and began drilling me about my experience.
When we got to the part about the 12 positive lymph nodes that were revealed in the axillary lymph node dissection that I had had, he said, "Oh, so it was very advanced breast cancer". I said that yes, it was.
He eyed me with pity. Not empathy. Not concern. Pity. I don't think I read anything into it. I felt that he began treating me as if I were currently in the throes of illness.
He then began to lecture me on the odds of a reoccurrence (a word that I don't like, far too many negative connotations). He said that so far I had just been plain old lucky.
I told him that I beg to differ.
Yes, I have been very lucky. But I have also worked extremely hard to regain my health. I am still working at it every single day of my life!!
I told him that since the diagnosis (in 1996), I have completely changed my diet, lifestyle, and mental attitude.
|
He said, "Unfortunately, none of that has anything to do with it". "It is all genetic". "Have you had genetic testing?" "You don't know if you are genetically positive or not?"
I told him that I don't feel that it is all genetic. I told him that I feel that genetics can be altered by diet and lifestyle. And anyway, I feel very genetically positive!
(I honestly don't remember if I was genetically tested. I tend to think that I wasn't, because I don't think genetic testing was available at that time. But I could be wrong. It is all a blur, and better left that way in my case).
I told this man, that at this point, I don't think that there is too much else left, or different, that I could / would do to improve my odds, and that I am quite happy and satisfied with my results thus far.
He said that there are many things I could currently be doing if I knew that I was genetically predisposed to breast cancer. I was curious as to what I might add to my healthy regimen, so I said: Such as? He said, "Such as: Double mastectomy and bilateral oophorectomy (ovary removal), because of the statistically high risk of ovarian cancer due to the history of breast cancer".
No thanks. I would rather keep my currently healthy breasts and ovaries intact via proper diet and lifestyle, than opt for the trauma of surgical removal simply as a means of prevention based on statistics that don't include healthy diet and lifestyle changes.
It turns out that it really wasn't much of a conversation.
We had nothing at all in common.
He was young. I could not help but wonder what would happen to him as the years passed if he remained on his present course of denial of all things healthy and positive.
I had no fight in me. No desire to fight. No desire to win. Not even any desire to prove a point.
The only desire that I had was to remove myself from his negative energy.
I felt that the impact of his negativity and fear mongering was far more harmful to me than any accidental genetic tendencies that I may or may not have inherited.
I have had my brush with cancer.
I have had my brush with death.
I don't want or need pity. And I definitely will not let fear and negativity into my world.
My brush with my own mortality served its purpose well. It was just the wake-up call that I needed.
It was the silver lining in an otherwise dark chapter of my life.
It brought me to where I am today, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I wrote a newsletter in October of 2009, and in it I quoted the following from a PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) publication:
"Eye Opening Statistics About Cancer: Sixty percent of all cancers in the United States are caused by the food that we eat. Thirty percent are caused by smoking. Five percent are due to viruses, and a mere two to three percent come from genetic factors".
Many of our readers responded in utter disbelief, and some challenged / doubted the credibility of such a statement. My only source at that time was that PCRM publication.
I fully believed the above quote, but did not have further sources from which to back it up.
Since that time, there have been many subsequent studies to support the above statement. One source that I have data from is the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic says: "Cancer Is Preventable", and provides the chart below to support their statement:
|
Environmental Causes Of Cancer Deaths
Factor | Percent | Tobacco | 30% | Diet / Obesity / Sedentary Lifestyle | 30% | Occupational / Environmental | 7% | Infectious Agents (viruses) | 5% | Alcohol | 3% | Ionizing and UV Radiation | 2% | Inherited Gene Mutations | 2% |
|
Can I add one more here?? Negativity and Fear: 1000 %!!
Another source that I like to use is a book called The China Study, which states that certain foods turn cancer cells on, while other foods turn them off. They provide data to back this statement up within the book.
And when I got home yesterday evening, after holding steadfast to my be liefs for the rest of my day yesterday, (post the above mentioned run in with the doctor), and while making sure to flood my body with the positive energy it so deserves rather than succumbing to one mans fear, negativity, and relative ignorance, I found an email waiting for me from one of my favorite mainstream publications: Harvard Medical Schools HealthBeat.
It said, and I quote:
"Data Shows That A Healthy Lifestyle Can Lower Cancer Risk"
Based on data presented this week at the Union for International Cancer Control meeting in Montreal, a startling 40% of cancer may stem from modifiable causes, such as diet, exercise, tobacco and alcohol exposure, and inappropriate screening. Although adapting a healthy lifestyle isn't an ironclad guarantee against cancer, it can help lower a person's individual risk. Read more.
I commend Harvard, and to them I say:
One small statement from Harvard.
One giant step for all (aware) humankind!
Hmm. I wonder if I have that doctor from yesterdays email ... ? But I digress.
The point is, that you simply cannot compromise your diet if you want to be healthy and disease free.
Nor can you cancel out harmful dietary habits by taking multiple dietary supplements and / or medications.
When it comes to your health, and several reliable studies now support this, a diet based on real plant based foods is of utmost importance.
The moral of the story is: Genetics are a positive, not a negative.
We inherit great things from our beloved ancestors, not just disease and illness. It is up to us how we choose to live our life.
Life is a gift, a genetically positive one.
Good health is the ultimate gift.
Please choose to live your life well.

As Always.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
