WEEKLY ARTICLE BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS
Among the rather large collection of Frequently Asked Questions existing within the Wholly Macro repertoire, is this very popular one: What should I eat for breakfast? The answer is so simple: Miso soup, softly cooked grains, and steamed vegetables. Delicious. Are you perplexed? Shaking your head in disbelief? Clinging for dear life to your bagels and smoothies?? Well: Please consider the following.
We start each day of our life anew. We have the opportunity to set the tone of our day, and subsequently our life, each and every day. From the moment we arise, until we lay our heads down at night and even during our sleep as well. Upon finishing your healthy meal each night, and allowing several vertical (and hopefully active) hours for digestion to take place, after showering in clean filtered water, with natural soap, and completing your nightly body scrub, you enter your dark, quiet, and comfortable bedroom that is circulating with fresh air, and slip into a worry free sleep, allowing all organs in your body to rest, repair, and rejuvenate in preparation for the next / new day ahead.
|
You arise, as quietly and peacefully as possible. Please try to not set yourself up for stressful mornings. Allow plenty of time for yourself in the morning so that you can gently ease into the day.
Prior to eating breakfast, it is best to do several minutes of gentle stretching or exercise. This allows your body, namely your digestive organs, time to fully awake and begin functioning, before becoming pre-occupied with the demanding task of digestion and assimilation that takes place all day every day. Not to mention the various other stressors that inevitably happen during the course of the day.
Don't you deserve a block of time each morning to care for yourself and prepare yourself and your body for the best day possible??
If so, then it is optimal to do non-stressful exercise each and every morning that you possibly can. Just make it happen. Keep it short and sweet.
Our exercise of choice in the morning is several rounds of the yoga posture known as the Sun Salutation, which stretches, stimulates, and activates most of the major muscle groups and glands within the body.
You should feel your appetite kick into gear at some point following. Try not to force your body to eat until it is ready.
When it is ready, have a healthy balanced meal ready for it!
The first food that we put into our body each day sets our emotional tone for the day. It also sets our blood sugar level for the day. And we want both our emotions and our blood sugar levels to be as stable as possible, don't we?
|
We like to start things off here at Wholly Macro with a small bowl of miso soup.

Miso, a savory fermented paste made from beans, grains, and / or vegetables, has been honored in Asia for centuries as a powerfully healing food. Unpasturized miso (and it MUST be unpasturized) contains natural probiotics - friendly bacterial enzymes - that can rebuild intestinal flora, strengthen digestion, promote bowel regulation, alkalize the body, and boost the immune system. Putting miso into your digestive tract first thing each day is an excellent way to start the day!
Following the miso soup are the all-important whole grains. Whole grains are essentially the most balanced food available to us on the entire planet. Whole grains strengthen thyroid function, regulate metabolism, and stabilize blood sugar levels.
It is very important to eat grains, in as whole a form as possible, at the beginning of each day. They lock in a steady flow of complex carbohydrates, which regulate blood sugar levels, and prevent episodes of high and low blood sugar level fluctuations from occurring.
If you could experience one, or several days, of steady blood sugar levels, we think you would find the experience to be absolutely life changing! You would be amazed at how well you would be able to deal with ALL that life throws your way when coming from a place of balanced stable blood sugar!
People who are used to eating "sweets" for breakfast, and that does include fruit, fruit smoothies, jams and jellies, etc., immediately set themselves up for blood sugar issues throughout their day. On an empty stomach, within an empty system, starting your day with simple sugar, even natural simple sugar such as fruit, creates spikes, and then subsequent dips in the blood sugar level. Ones that are difficult to ever gain control of or stabilize.
|
Please equate your emotions with your blood sugar level. If your blood sugar level is all over the map, your emotions and behavior will be so too. It is then that such issues as misplaced anger, inappropriate outbursts, inability to focus and concentrate, physical and emotional fatigue, hyper emotional sensitivity, and on and on, occur. Do you want your days to turn into this type of negative and acid producing meltdown of events, or do you want to look back on your day with pride and peace of mind, knowing that you came from a strong and stable place of health and balance and did not stoop to the level of the less aware / more erratic eaters in our midst?
The simple sugar in fructose just cannot provide us with the enduring type energy needed to sustain us throughout our day. Not emotionally or physically. But the complex sugar contained within whole grains can.
*Adding a small amount of seasonal or dried fruit to a grainy breakfast porridge is acceptable and appropriate in most cases however, if you feel the need.
Dry cereal does not equal a whole grain BTW. Hard crunchy dry foods irritate the liver. And an irritated liver results in irritable in nature mood swings similar to the above-mentioned emotions of anger and impatience, thus only compounding symptoms related to instability in blood sugar levels as a result of unbalanced and inappropriate nutritional intake.
Mornings are related to liver energy. It is wisest not to do things in the morning that irritate the liver. For this reason, soft and moist whole grains make the most peaceful breakfast food.
Try eating lightly cooked vegetables at breakfast along with your miso soup and grains. Vegetables contain natural sugars of a more complex nature than fruit. They are naturally alkalizing. And they taste amazingly sweet when the taste buds have not been skewed by the concentrated sweetness of fruit!
|
The complex sugars in whole grains and vegetables help overcome simple sugar cravings by providing us with long lasting energy that we would otherwise look to simple sugar and / or caffeine to obtain. When chewed slowly, even more of the natural complex sugars are released into our systems, and unknowingly, we feel satisfied, and stop needing to reach for unhealthy stimulants.
What about protein you ask? Protein is generally too heavy to be eaten as a breakfast food. All efforts are being made to arise in the morning. You do not want to weigh yourself down right off the bat by eating a heavy protein in the morning (although small servings of light protein dishes like scrambled tofu with plenty of vegetables (along with some soft grains) can work on occasion). Similarly, you do not want to let your entire allotment of energy rise straight to your head, as is the case when you eat concentrated sweet foods first thing in the morning. This can cause you to be "spaced out" and ungrounded for the remainder of the day.
Grains center your energy in perfect balance between mind and body.
You can reserve protein for lunch and dinner.
We have an excellent breakfast dish on the menu this week called Ojiya. It is of Japanese origin, and refers to softly cooked moist rice that has been combined with chopped vegetables and then lightly seasoned with miso. It is customarily used in Japan to provide substantial nourishment, while energizing both body and mind.
While Ojiya makes an excellent breakfast dish, it can be enjoyed at any meal.
Try it with a side of the gorgeously colorful and delicious Braised Red Cabbage With Kale And Hijiki.
And if you take a small amount of our extremely thick and potent Split Pea Soup and use it as a
starter base, you can then thin it down to a lighter breakfast soup consistency by adding water diluted miso paste.
To make your life easier, most any soup, grain, or vegetable dish that appears on our weekly menu's have been designed with breakfast in mind, so can easily be used as breakfast foods, perhaps with the addition of a little more fluid and / or cooking (please click here to see our article entitled Eating Instructions for more detail). And of course they can still be used at any other meal of the day as well.
So relax, and have fun enjoying healthy breakfasts.
Dine like the champion that you are.
You deserve it!
As always.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
