                    The Ten Commandments of Health


My favorite magazine, AARP, (seriously: so informative, and full of great ideas about how to live a long, smart, healthy, happy, and productive life), had a very sweet and interesting article in it this month that just has to be shared!

 

Gayle and Jaime in KitchenThe article spoke about a man named George Calver who was the first doctor appointed to treat members of the U.S. Congress.

 

Dr. Calver was hired in 1928.

 

According to the article, senators and representatives were dying at the rate of 20 per year at that time.

 

Dr. Calver served as doctor to the U.S. Congress for 38 years, and gained acclaim for improving the health and lifespan of his important clients, the U.S. members of Congress. According to the article, he did so by developing what he called The Ten Commandments Of Health.

 

After sizing up the diet, lifestyle, and stress levels of the U. S. Congress, he passed out the commandments (below) on wallet-sized cards, prefacing them with this quote:

 

 

"If a man wishes to be on the job and physically fit, he must obey the following simple rules."

Eat Wisely

 

Drink (Water) Plentifully

 

Eliminate Thoroughly

 

Bathe Cleanly

 

Exercise Rationally

 

Accept Inevitables (Don't Worry)

 

Play Enthusiastically

 

Relax Completely

 

Sleep Sufficiently

 

Check Up Occasionally

 

 

He ends The Commandments with this postscript:

 

P.S. If you give 5% of your time to keeping well, you won't have to give 100% of your time to being sick.

 

So simple. So kind. So heartfelt. So wise. So preventative! Words to live by, don't you think?

 

And these basic premises of preventative health care have amazingly not changed from 1928 to now.

 

Dr. Calver knew that prevention is key. It is of utmost importance to PREVENT any deterioration of your current (healthy) condition, and ideally, to improve upon an unhealthy condition. Why not??!! It is possible after all.

 

We're just not sure how Dr. Calver fit his Ten Commandments into only 5% of his time!! But we are sure that if you take the time to follow his advice, no matter how much or how little time it takes, you will be able to enjoy a life free of the physical constraints of an unhealthy body. And that is worth everything.

MINESTRONE MISO SOUP                                                                     SMALL___ LARGE___
A rich full bodied macrobiotic version of the Italian classic, using a variety of mineral rich and kidney strengthening beans: black, white, and chick peas, combined with bite sized dices of carrot, celery, yellow onion, sweet and fragrant fennel, bitter green liver cleansing arugula, brown rice chiacciole noodles, (the coolest little round, hollow noodles that allow little items like beans to float through them!), flavorful and decorative cremini mushrooms, energetically relaxing, cleansing shiitake mushrooms, wakame sea vegetable, barley miso, and a sprinkling of fresh green chlorophyll rich Italian parsley.

BROWN RICE AND SPELT MARINARA                                                    SMALL___ LARGE___
Delicious grains of medium brown rice are cooked with mineral rich kombu sea vegetable, and good for the liver plump and juicy grains of whole heirloom spelt, then tossed with good for the spleen and pancreas dried apricots, and trace mineral and vitamin E rich lightly roasted sunflower seeds that are draped with a very healing and relaxing for the stomach, pancreas, and blood sugar levels, naturally sweet - vegetable marinara sauce made from kabocha squash, carrots, and yellow onions. Garnished with rich and green blood building parsley.
   
SESAME SEARED TEMPEH AND RUTABAGA                                           SMALL___ LARGE___
Tempeh is a brilliant way to consume protein. It is a fermented form of protein that is very easy on the digestive system, promoting better digestion of food and therefore better absorption of nutrients. This tempeh is a soybean and wild rice blend. Bite sized cubes, are marinated in circulation stimulating fresh ginger juice, then coated with calcium rich brown and black sesame seeds and arrowroot, to form a paper thin crust, and served with alternating cubes of strengthening and grounding, sweet and mineral rich rutabaga. Garnished with liver relaxing upwardly energetic scallions.

Brown rice bowtie noodles, such fun to look at and to eat, and healthy too, are tossed with juicy portabello mushrooms, uniquely flavorful shiitake mushrooms, some cremini mushrooms, naturally fermented and enzyme rich black olives, bitter green good for the heart and liver mineral rich kale, chlorophyll rich fresh parsley, vitalizing pine nuts, and organic capers, for a perfect, warm or cool, light and flavorful anytime pasta dish.


ROASTED ROOT VEGETABLE MEDLEY                                                   SMALL____LARGE___
A colorful blend of assorted strengthening and stabilizing root vegetables: beta carotene rich carrots, naturally sweet and subtly spicy parsnips, mineral rich turnips, dark green iron rich brussel sprouts, and blood strengthening and cleansing fresh burdock root, roasted with a touch of toasted sesame oil and fresh ginger to bring out their natural sweetness, and garnished with bright green chives.

Deep orange beta carotene rich flavorful sweet potatoes, are subtly blended with cinnamon and nutmeg, then blended with naturally fermented amasake brown rice milk, very high in fiber / good for the large intestine agar agar gelatinous sea vegetable, unprocessed arrowroot natural thickener, calcium rich sesame tahini, and the gentle sweetness of complex carbohydrate derived brown rice syrup, on a crust of caramelized rolled oats and calcium rich almonds, topped with luscious dollops of rich and creamy vanilla scented tofu whip cr�me.
