WEEKLY ARTICLE

                                          Vacation Procrastination

 

Wholly Macro specializes in diagnosing other people's health problems and in cooking healing cuisine to remedy and / or prevent said problems. And we get so wrapped up in our work that we don't always take enough time to take a good look at our own selves, although we do always eat (our own cooking) exceptionally well. So recently, we began taking a little closer look at ourselves, and to our shock and dismay we found that we are showing some symptoms of a malady we like to call Vacation Procrastination!

 

Throughout the year there are many seasonal afflictions, such as Spring Fever, Seasonal Mood Disorder, Winter Blues, even Summertime Blues. We address these various afflictions via our newsletters during their appropriate seasons quite often, but Vacation Procrastination is not especially seasonal. In fact, it can strike at any time, and is cumulative. In other words, the longer you procrastinate in taking a vacation, the worse your symptoms of Vacation Procrastination can become.

  

 

 

Common symptoms include but are not limited to: Workaholic tendencies, guilt, panic, anxiety, impatience, inability to relax, impaired performance, inability to handle stress, low energy, and foggy memory of what it feels like to relax.

 

Early diagnosis is key. Prevention is even better! 

 

 

 

 

Preventative measures to help avoid Vacation Procrastination Include:

 

 

Letting someone else plan a vacation for you. Please be sure that it is the type of vacation that does the work for you. A tour or cruise is best. Let them do the cooking, navigating, "driving", and cleaning while you simply have fun and work on your rest and relaxation skills! There are many health-oriented options to choose from.

 

 

 

 

Taking a "Staycation". Vacation Procrastination and its various symptoms can sometimes restrict your ability to plan and / or travel and you may find that you need to "get away" without really getting away. This age old remedy allows you to enjoy the benefits of a vacation without having to actually travel because we all know that in this post 9/11 era, travel can sometimes be stressful. You have to be up for it. Taking a stay at home vacation may be just what you need to recharge, regroup, reboot, and reduce your stress.

 

 

 

Taking a vacation that is sufficient in length. Every several vacations, you simply must plan one that "gets you away from it all" long enough to be completely therapeutic and re-energizing. Take the time to plan it appropriately. Be creative. Make it work for you. Experience a complete change in latitude / attitude, and return home with a whole new outlook, appreciation, and perspective on life, and enjoy experiencing whatever and wherever that may take you.  

 

 

 

Building in short breaks. Create "mini-vacations". Take long weekends in between planning an international tour! Divide and conquer instead of taking one long vacation with too few breaks in between.

 

 

 

Faking it! One of our personal favorites is to rent a place somewhere, anywhere, for a week, a month, an entire season, and pretend to live there. Set up (temporary) "house". Shop and explore. Cook and create to your hearts content. Be a local, live the life, but without the pressure of the daily grind. Please Note: In order for this remedy to work you must turn the phone and computer off. Do not have your regular mail forwarded, and whatever you do, do not check your email!!

 

 

 

Please keep in mind that it is best to treat Vacation Procrastination with a diverse selection of the above preventative measures. As with everything, it does not have to be an all or nothing approach. Mix it up. Stay at home for one break. Take a nice relaxing cruise for another. Take a few short trips / long weekends to local destinations for another, and every several vacations plan "the big one" and go all out on a full blown (R & R optional) adventure.

 

  

  Wholly Macro has been known to work for as many as six months at a time without a break in the past. That is not balanced and does not allow us to set a good example for all of you. And especially when we find ourselves exhibiting some of the very symptoms of Vacation Procrastination we have listed above!! So we are going to follow our own advice (in our advancing years) and seek balance, taking regularly scheduled "vacations" of various kinds, be they restful re-groupings, or grand adventures.  

 

 

Please read on below to where we have devoted an entire section of this newsletter to how to best continue to utilize and enjoy the convenience and health benefits of the Wholly Macro food, even while we are closed, because we intend to continue taking good care of you just as we always have, even if we do take a few extra breaks per year (to take good care of us too), and will always give you plenty of advance notice before we close so that you can order extra food and freeze it.

the end of December when we will close once again for

ABOUT THIS WEEKS MENU

Suggestions and Tips On How To Best Utilize

Wholly Macro's Food While We Are Closed:

 

We have a few more weeks of wonderful menus planned for you, with lots of dishes that are very conducive to freezing.


We suggest that you order a few extra dishes each of these weeks, and freeze them, to hold you over until we re-open. This will give you a nice variety of super convenient, already prepared, excellent quality foods to select from, from your handy, frozen, Wh
olly Macro stash!

  

We encourage you to always do the very best that you can for yourselves each and every precious day of your lives. Your best may not be perfect. But, if you have been putting forth your best effort, and if you have been ordering from us fairly consistently, you should be in very good shape, having been eating the best possible food, as fresh as possible, just full of energy, vitality, and nutrients, each week. Eating our fresh, freshly frozen food is the next best thing in our opinion. (To Thaw: Simply move the frozen containers of food to the refrigerator a day or so before you want to use them. They will thaw out gradually and evenly in this way, and be all ready for you to heat up and enjoy per your usual method).

 

We think this far surpasses eating canned or packaged food. And also far surpasses eating lesser quality frozen food from the grocery store that has been frozen for many many months before you ever purchase it. And yes, we think it even surpasses eating the prepared "health food" from the deli counters too, because first of all, that food is not fresh. It is all pre-assembled in a central facility and then shipped to each store where it is then re-heated or reconstituted. The ingredients used are far from pure, and it is just loaded with bad quality salt and oils. We do not mean to sound like we are criticizing, or competing, because we are not, we just want you to be well informed and aware.

 

 

 

Our dishes freeze really well. If you have our nice hardy soups, beans, tempeh dishes, various rolls, pasta's, grains, and a nice selection of desserts (especially the desserts!), freshly frozen, you can always steam some fresh veggies, cook a nice piece of wild fish, make a salad, and have yourself a very fine, simple to prepare meal.

 

 

 

 

Using the extras that you purchased from us in advance, and some fresh foods that you prepare on your own, we think you can get by for a few weeks quite well without us, and hope you will take
our suggestions to heart (and hearth), because we care about you, and don't want you to suffer in any way while we are closed. By giving you a few weeks advance notice of our closing, we hope to be allowing you plenty of time to prepare.

 

So please take a look at the October 5 menu below. It's got plenty, plenty, plenty of GREAT dishes to choose from that just so happen to freeze exceptionally well!!

ORANGE SCENTED CORN AND KABOCHA SQUASH MISO SOUP             SMALL___ LARGE___
Sweet and creamy cooking pumpkins lend themselves perfectly to form a thick and rich base for this healthy miso soup. They are cooked with kombu sea vegetable to impart easily digestible minerals into the broth, sweet and orange beta carotene rich kabocha squash and carrots, crispy and naturally diuretic celery, sweet yellow onions, bursting with sweet and juicy sun drenched flavor bright yellow corn kernels, fresh ginger root, mineral rich wakame sea vegetable, immune system strengthening shiitake mushrooms, enzyme rich yellow miso, liver cleansing orange zest, and a garnish of fresh green chives.

BROWN  RICE  PAELLA                                                                           SMALL___ LARGE___
Perfectly balanced medium grain brown rice is cooked with kombu sea vegetable to enhance it's mineral content, then tossed into a colorful paella with fresh green peas, sunshine yellow corn kernels, red onions, digestion promoting green olives, omega fatty acid and trace mineral rich sunflower seeds, pungent fresh ginger, and a touch of tangy and alkalizing umeboshi plum..

MEDITERRANEAN THREE BEAN SALAD                                                    SMALL___ LARGE___
Pancreas healthy chick peas, deeply rich red heart healthy kidney beans, and iron and mineral rich good for the kidneys black beans, are cooked with kombu sea vegetable to aid in their digestion and enhance their mineral quality, then combined with enzyme rich pickled cucumber, red onions, and radish, to create a fresh and flavorful crunch. Finished with a burst of liver cleansing tangy lemon zest, alkalizing umeboshi plum, olive oil, and chlorophyll rich fresh green dill.

SHIITAKE FETTUCINE ALFREDO                                                              SMALL___ LARGE___
Brown rice based fettuccine noodles are smothered in a rich, creamy, and most importantly healthy alfredo sauce, made with protein rich and high in calcium tofu, yellow onions, bursting with live enzymes yellow miso, and calcium rich rice milk, laced throughout with cremini mushrooms, and the unique flavor and immune system supporting quality of shiitake mushrooms, and garnished with fresh green iron rich, red blood cell building Italian parsley.

FRENCH CUT GREEN BEAN KINPIRA ALMONDINE                                   SMALL____LARGE___
Graceful french cut green beans, are lightly stir fried with blood cleansing and generally strengthening fresh burdock root, good for the stomach and pancreas rutabaga, beautiful beta carotene rich julienne carrots, circulation stimulating fresh ginger root, a touch of flavorful toasted sesame oil and tamari soy sauce, and a crunchy garnish of lightly roasted almond slivers.

FRESH FRUIT TRIFLE WITH ALMOND WHIP CR�ME                               SMALL___ LARGE___
A trifle is a cake, fruit, and whip cr�me or custard layered dessert. Delicious, but traditionally not especially healthy except for the fruit, but our version is, of course!!! The cake is a whole wheat pastry flour, sunflower oil, and brown rice syrup batter, layered with rich and creamy high calcium, low fat tofu and almond whip cr�me with subtle hints of vanilla, and strawberries and kiwi for a little red and green action. Sweetened with the gently sweet and complex carbohydrate goodness of brown rice syrup, the cake is garnished with juicy orange fresh peach.

Instruction is based on oriental medicine/macrobiotic principals. Start with a basic class  with soup, beans and grains or try a dessert class for a real treat!
