WEEKLY ARTICLE
There IS A Cure For The Summertime Blues
June 30, the Fourth of July weekend. Is it mid-summer yet?? Not really, but almost! And so far this summer we have run into quite a few blue people, and we are not referring to their coloring, although read on: a blue - purple (and / or white or red) facial tone can be indicative of poor blood circulation and heart problems.
In Oriental Medicine, the heart and small intestine are associated with the summer season. "The heart is the ruler over summer. It is the root of life and generates all changes in spirit." A healthy heart enables us to understand and see clearly, and to serve compassionately.
The spiritual heart, when wide open, represents a fountain of youth, and a force that helps us resist environmental insults, infections and disease.
The small intestine works in conjunction with the heart. It receives, digests, and assimilates nourishment. It separates the pure from the impure. The small intestine absorbs nutrients from the food we eat, to feed every cell of our body via good blood circulation.
The purer our food, and via the strength our small intestine, the purer our heart. And pure hearts exude happiness and joy. The heart / fire / summer energy gives warmth, enthusiasm, vitality, and energy to others when in a healthy state.
The pure of heart stay younger longer!
Healthy heart energy is also related to creativity, intuition, activity, and motion, so be sure to get your exercise on during the summer!
A recent study from Boston University School Of Medicine found that doing an hour of yoga three times a week for 12 weeks increased GABA levels by 13 percent. GABA, a "feel good" neurotransmitter in the brain, is lower in people who are depressed. Many anti-depression medications work by targeting and raising levels of GABA in the brain. Please, try a healthy diet and exercise first. You may never need the medications!
If the heart is in an unhealthy / imbalanced state, there is sadness, the doldrums, aka, The Summertime Blues. There can also be inappropriate responses / abnormal emotions, and even excessive joy and laughter (think manic behavior / related to too much heart ~ fire energy).
Less esoterically, the heart is responsible for circulation and body temperature maintenance. To check the heart and circulatory functions, observe the facial complexion and color, and fingertips and nail beds for a red, white, or blue color, which indicates either overactive circulation, poor sluggish circulation, or a combination of both.
Thus, per the above: poor nutrition creates poor circulation, and poor circulation does not allow us to receive proper nutrition. A vicious "nowhere" cycle that hampers the heart, the small intestine, and overall health and happiness.
The Nei Ching (ancient oriental wisdom) offers this:
"If people pay attention to the five flavors (sweet, sour, pungent, bitter, and salty), and blend them well, their bones will remain straight, their muscles will remain tender and young, breath and blood will circulate freely, the pores will be in fine texture, and consequently the breath and bones will be filled with the essence of life".
Diet and exercise are key components to having a strong healthy heart and a long happy summer season.
Eat well, hydrate well, exercise well, stay grateful, and experience and enjoy the happy benefits this season brings.
This quote is from one of my favorite inspirational writers / women. Anytime you are feeling blue, pick up one of her books, open it to any page at all, and just start reading. It is sure to inspire you and cheer you up.
"Don't dip into the past to be miserable in the present." Louise Hay / Author

****HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY**** whollymacro@bellsouth.net ~ www.whollymacrobiotics.com
RED AZUKI BEAN VITALITY MISO SOUP SMALL___ LARGE___ Soup has the ability to bring the healing quality of food deep into the body. With that in mind, imagine the unsurpassed kidney strengthening quality of azuki beans cooked with kombu sea vegetable, the lung cleansing quality of fresh lotus root, the very deep fat flushing quality of dried daikon and shiitake mushrooms, and the flavorful and circulation promoting quality of fresh ginger, cooked in a barley miso and wakame sea vegetable broth, and dotted with bright orange kabocha squash, yellow onions, and fresh green scallions. Not to mention the Red Fourth of July summer color!
BROWN AND WILD WILD RICE SALAD SMALL___ LARGE___ Wild wild rice, the uncultivated and powerfully revitalizing native American grain of our ancestors that is good for revitalizing the adrenal system, is cooked with medium grain brown rice and mineral rich kombu sea vegetable, then tossed into a healthy and delicious salad, with kidney strengthening dried cranberries, pancreas relaxing sweet yellow onions, naturally diuretic crisp green celery, lots of chlorophyll rich red blood cell building fresh green parsley, and liver supportive fresh orange zest.
COOK-OUT TIME TOFU ARAME VEGETABLE BURGERS SMALL___ LARGE___ These thick and juicy whole grain burgers are made from spleen and pancreas healthy millet, protein rich tofu, iron and trace mineral rich arame sea vegetable, tiny dices of yellow onion, juicy corn kernels, fresh carrots and parsley, and a glaze of brown rice syrup, calcium rich brown sesame seeds, and shoyu. They are great warmed up on the grill!
PENNE PASTA WITH SEITAN AND SHIITAKES SMALL___ LARGE___ Brown rice is the base of these penne noodles that are delicately draped with pungent and flavorful capers, protein rich sauted seitan, immune system stimulating flavorful shiitake mushrooms and cremini mushrooms, pancreas nurturing sweet yellow onions, alkalizing and digestive system strengthening kuzu, and lots of flavorful and chlorophyll rich fresh parsley.
PRESSED SALAD WITH SESAME UMEBOSHI TAHINI SMALL____LARGE___ I never understood what a "pressed salad" was, until I mastered the fine art of making this ultimate salad. Any raw vegetables can be used, because they are quite literally "pressed" under weight, with umeboshi plum in this case, until the raw and watery quality is released, and removed, and you are left with the pressed/marinated/naturally pickled, rich in digestive enzyme, alkalizing, vitamin, mineral, and fiber rich healthiness of brightly colored red and green cabbage, yellow onions, celery, red radish, arugula, and collard greens, with a touch of freshly ground trace mineral rich sesame seed tahini dressing.
RED, WHITE, AND BLUEBERRY COBBLER SMALL___ LARGE___ A magnificent, just bursting with summer ripeness deep blue-purple phyto nutrient rich blueberry, fresh orange zest, alkalizing and intestine/digestion strengthening kuzu root thickener, and brown rice syrup filling, is topped with a mixture of rolled oats, vitamin E rich sunflower seeds, calcium rich almonds, omega fatty acid rich walnuts, and a hint of cinnamon and vanilla.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor
