Home Remedy Recipes
Sweet Vegetable Drink
~ Finely chop equal amounts of four sweet vegetables such as: onion, carrot, cabbage, and kabocha or butternut squash. ~ Bring the vegetables to a boil in four times the amount of spring water, and then reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 minutes. For a sweeter thicker more concentrated liquid allow to simmer uncovered for an additional 10 - 20 minutes. ~ You can then strain the vegetables from the broth (and use them separately in soups or stews), or blend the vegetables into the broth to make a sweet vegetable "butter / syrup". ~ Sweet Vegetable Drink can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days, but should be allowed to return to room temperature (or warmed up) before drinking. Sweet Vegetable Drink is good for relaxing the middle part of the body, especially the pancreas. It is a useful remedy for satisfying sweet cravings, and also very helpful to take in cases of hypoglycemia. Try it, sip on it when sweet cravings arise. You will be amazed at how sweet and deliciously satisfying it is. We really like it cooked down into a thick and sweet syrup more than as a thinner juice like drink, but try it both ways to determine which works best to curb YOUR sweet tooth!
Sweet Vegetable Drink With Whole Grains
~ Following the above recipe, add 1 cup of whole grain of choice to the mixture, most preferably millet, but any whole grain will work. ~ Wash and lightly pan roast the grain. ~ Place ingredients in a pot in this order: Carrot Squash Cabbage Onion Pinch of sea salt The grain (will be on top) Gently pour spring water (4 times the amount of ingredients) into the pan, trying not to disturb the layering of the ingredients. ~ Bring temperature up to a boil, then immediately lower the flame and simmer for 30 minutes until grain is soft. ~ Eat as a soupy stew like dish. Add less water for thicker results if preferred. Sweet Vegetable Drink With Whole Grains is not nearly as sweet as plain Sweet Vegetable Drink so is better suited for pre-diabetic and diabetic conditions. Millet is a whole grain that is very healing and supportive to the pancreas, but all whole grains help to regulate and stabilize the blood sugar making this a very good remedy to use as a healthy snack. It will fill you up without creating a spike (or dip) in your blood sugar level. ~ Enjoy! |

WEEKLY ARTICLE
Home Remedies: A Short Story What are these home remedies that I wrote about last week, and included recipes for this week? Home remedies are, quite simply: Food! Food that has been singled out, sometimes concentrated to increase it's particular and unique healing power, and then utilized in such a way as to zoom in on and address a specific issue or condition. Home remedies are archived from ancient traditional healing practices and can be either internal, such as drinks and teas, or external, such as compresses and plasters.
What is unique about home remedies is that the healing foods that they utilize are used more frequently, and in a more concentrated form, than they would be in regular cooking. They can get to the root of a specific problem quickly, or target and ease a specific condition or inflammation very directly. When I first started my healthy adventure in 1996 I was healing from breast cancer. All of this healthy food information was overwhelming to me. I had no knowledge or use for home remedies. I just could not incorporate them into my limited world. My brain could not take on anything more than the shopping, chopping, and cooking! I believed in the power of the food to heal my body 100%, but did not understand, and therefore had my doubts about the power of home remedies. Shortly after my healing journey began, a lump the size of a large grape popped up on my forearm, on the opposite side of my body as the cancer had been. I panicked. I made an appointment with the oncologist, and also spoke to a macrobiotic counselor. The counselor suggested I do an external plaster over the lump. It involved taro potato. I remember that I had to search all over South Florida to locate a taro potato. I really didn't have any idea what a taro potato was, which made the search for one even harder! The entire time, I was shaking my head and muttering about how silly the entire venture was. A friend commented that I believed so much in the food, and wondered why I had such little faith in the plaster. I really had no answer. I just could not connect those particular dots at the time. But after finally locating the elusive taro potato, I proceeded to follow the instructions on how to make the plaster, wrapping it around my arm that night before bed, and sleeping with the concoction all night.
In the morning I removed the plaster as instructed, and to my total disbelief and amazement, the lump had shrunk to less than half it's size. I repeated the entire process the following night, and the next morning the lump was gone. I could feel a little hollow indentation where it had been, and still bear a small scar to this day. But no more lump. I cancelled the Doctors appointment. Was it a new cancer, or was it just a cystic or fatty discharge? I don't know to this day. I only know that it was gone, and in those two nights, I became a believer in home remedies. The understanding of their use became one of my many areas of interest, pursuit, and expertise. In last weeks newsletter about onions I mentioned two of my favorite home remedies: the Sweet Vegetable Drink, and the Sweet Vegetable Drink With Whole Grains. Many of you asked me how to make them, so I have included a recipe for each under the Weekly News section of this newsletter (in the column to the left of this article). Have fun with them. Use them well and in good health. And please be advised: Before trying any home remedy, always seek the advice of a qualified macrobiotic counselor and / or your medical doctor if you have a serious health condition. BTW: The menu this week is full of those deliciously healthy, nectar to the pancreas sweet vegetables, used in a number of creative ways. Please check it out below! In Health As Always. Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor
