Once we re-open on January 6, we will not close again until April, when we will once again journey to the Kushi Institute for another two week intensive in macrobiotic cooking, shiatsu, and Oriental medicine and diagnosis. We look forward to a long, relaxing, healthy, and uninterrupted food delivery winter of 2011 with you until then! |
MORE WEEKLY NEWS Laughter Is The Best Medicine
Where did that expression come from, and is it true? We all know that we laugh when we are happy, but can laughter therapy make us happy? More and more, science is pointing to just that. Laughing without reason is just as healthy as laughing after a joke. Forced laughter gives way to real joy according to the Easter Seals Center in Miami, where they hold classes on laughter therapy in their adult day care program. A little research on the benefits of laughing shows that laughter brings more oxygen into the body than ordinary breathing does. Laughter also stimulates motion in the chest, diaphragm, and abdomen, and brings blood flow to the throat. In other words it is an excellent lung cleanser / breathing exercise. And it generates the release of feel good endorphins that in turn boost the immune system. Another big benefit: You can carry laughter with you anywhere you go, no extra equipment needed, just a desire for happiness and an appreciation for humor!

ABOUT THIS WEEKS MENU
And just like that, 2010 is over! We hope it was as good for you as it was for us, because here at Wholly Macro things just get better and better, irrelevant of what goes on in the "real world". Recessions come, recessions go (we hope), people come, people go, but health and good food, that just has to be here to stay. And each year, as our bodies become healthier and stronger, things get better, and easier, for us. "Things" don't actually change, we just become better able to deal with them as our adrenal system (the one that is responsible for helping us deal with stress of all kinds), becomes stronger. And we have to say; eating a healthy diet is a cumulative process that just keeps building on itself while offering more and more physical and mental rewards.
So, in light of all this, we have compiled an extra special menu for you this last week of 2010, to help you celebrate whatever holiday you choose to with joy, festivity, and healthy and satisfying nourishment. Order extra, to hold you over for the week between Christmas and New Years that we will be closed, and then we will be back in a flash in 2011 with many more exciting menu's to choose from.
We have two delicious dishes with fresh and seasonal cranberries in them this week: the infamous Fillo Pastry Puffs with Cranberry and Onion Tapenade, and the Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Cranberry Kuzu Glaze. Cranberries contain one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants of any food. Studies conducted at the University of Scranton, PA, found cranberries to contain the highest level of phenol antioxidants of any fruit. Antioxidants are premier disease-fighters and anti-aging agents. Cranberry phenols have been found to help protect against certain types of cancers, the brain cell damage that usually occurs in the early stages after a stroke, and urinary tract infections. They protect against the free radical activity that is thought to be responsible for oxidizing cholesterol, which makes it harmful to arteries and the heart; memory impairment; difficulty in mobility; cataracts, and macular degeneration of the eyes. The holiday season is cranberry season. We enjoy using them, not only because they taste great, but because they offer an extra big dose of health-promoting antioxidants as well.

WEEKLY ARTICLE
Happy Holidays, Healthy New Year
~ Thoughts and Inspirations
We have compiled a series of New Years Resolutions and Thoughts, Wholly Macro style, to inspire all of us in a positive direction as we close out the previous year and ring in the new. We are sure you will notice a common thread throughout...
Healthy Holiday Tips
Wash Your Hands Often - There are a lot of exchanges going on over the holidays, be it food, greetings, caring for friends and relatives children, etc. Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important (and easy) steps you can take to avoid the spread of germs and / or food related illnesses.
Manage stress - Keep a check on over-committing yourself over the holidays. They are supposed to be fun, not stressful!
Eat Healthy and Be Active - Practice balance and moderation in order to enjoy the holidays the healthy way by keeping healthy foods and treats handy, and find fun ways to stay active, such as dancing, and laughing!
Travel Safely - Don't drink and drive, and don't let your friends and relatives drink and drive either. For many of us health conscious people, we can offer to be the designated driver as we sip on healthy and non-alcoholic amasake eggnog, Martinelli's sparkling cider, or kombucha tea. They all make great cocktail substitutes!
Towards A Successful Life
Be Optimistic - Foster a sunnier outlook towards everything.
Be Resilient - Always put yourself in a good light rather than a poor one.
Be Passionate - Find your passion, your calling, and stick to it. Re-connect with what turned you on as a child and find the adult world corollary.
Connectedness - Open your circle to anyone who can be an ally in your life. Everyone, no matter how different they may be from you, have something to offer.
Intuition - Intuition is our sixth sense. Make your intuition work for you. Figure out what yours is saying, and respect, honor, and listen to its valuable message. It is your own true hope for yourself.
Gratitude - Be thankful for what you have and give back. Gratitude is the antidote to materialism. Materialism is obsessing about what you desire. Gratitude is appreciating what you have.
Michio Kushi's Seven Conditions Of Health
Endless Energy - Keeping active, alert, and flexible all day; working tirelessly in pursuit of your dream.
Strong Appetite - Having a strong appetite for whatever we engage in or encounter, and a passion for freedom, justice, and truth.
Deep Sleep - Maintaining the ability to fall asleep easily, sleep deeply, and awaken renewed and refreshed.
Strong Memory - Maintaining memory of our spiritual destiny and universal oneness.
Peaceful Mind - Being calm and peaceful under all circumstances. Change difficulties into opportunities, and turn enemies into friends.
Being Joyful and Alert - Keep a bright and optimistic mind; cheerfully greet everyone you meet, and maintain order in your behavior.
Endless Appreciation - Being grateful for the gift of life.
One of our favorite "teachers" is Swami Beyondananda. He says that if we want world peace we must live like nomads. That is where I no mad at you, and you no mad at me. That way, there will be no madness on the planet.
Wholly Macro wishes you health in body, mind, and spirit. Healthy bodies create healthy minds. And healthy minds create a healthy and peaceful world.
Our best to you as always, and Happy Holidays and Healthy New Year to us all.
In Health and Balance.
