UMD Food Pantry Drive
Right now, UMD's Food Pantry is distributing about 4,000 pounds of food a month.  With more families than ever accessing the Food Pantry we want to kick off our efforts with a food drive to collect 12,000 pounds of food - enough to keep the Pantry stocked for 3 months. The need for a food drive is more important in the summer because hundreds of children who receive free breakfasts and lunches at school do not have that opportunity in the summer.  The result: demand goes up and resources go down.  That's where you can make a real difference.

From April 18 through May 16, St. Philip's and partnering congregations will bring in non-perishable foodstuffs as listed below. With 12 churches participating we should be able to reach this ambitious goal. Plus, each food item donated in the month of April has the potential to be matched $1 per item by the Feinstein Foundation.

So the more you donate, the more UMD benefits, both in food and cash. The following list of foods was developed with the input of UMD staff, and remember, all food must be nonperishable.

Peanut butter and jelly, powdered milk, canned meats (tuna, salmon, stews, Spam or Treet), canned soups, dried beans, rice, and pasta, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, pasta sauce and fixins', canned green and yellow/orange vegetables, pork 'n beans and other canned beans, macaroni and cheese, canned fruit and applesauce, cereals, oatmeal, grits, and other breakfast foods, juices, teas and coffee, sugar  and non-sugar sweeteners, flour, salt and pepper, condiments, baby foods.

Vacation Bible School:  A Gift to the Community
by Molly Reingruber

I love VBS Week at St. Philip's!  Small smiling faces (some familiar, some not) abound, as does energy and excitement.  VBS is a gift, a gift that touches many.  Of course, the children benefit directly, but it is also a gift to parents who need free childcare during the summer.

VBS has grown and now includes families from the surrounding neighborhood.  With this growth comes more opportunities for adults to live into the Beloved Community by sharing their time with VBS.   Ask anyone who worked with us last year, and they will say that they receive much more than they give.  They have even taken vacation time or rearranged work schedules so they could work with the children!

And yet, we still need more volunteers to fully staff VBS this year.  We need group leaders or station leaders ASAP (stations will be in the areas of music, crafts, snacks, Bible Study, games, etc), and are particularly interested in anyone who has any CPR/First Aid training.  Contact me today at mollyr@stphilipsdurham.org or 919-682-5708 if you are able to give at least one morning the week of June 21-25

VBS Registration
VBS logo
It's time to register for Under Construction: A Habitat for Humanity Vacation Bible School. Under Construction welcomes preschoolers (3-4 year olds) through rising 6th graders to share Christian faith through service to the church and to the community beyond the church.  Vacation Bible School will be June 21-25,  9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Attendance at Under Construction is expected to be heavy. We strongly encourage pre-registration to ensure your child's place in this terrific VBS.  Registration forms are available at www.stphilipsdurham.org and at church on the credenza. Please return them to the church office as soon as possible.  For questions or to find out how you can help with this exciting VBS, contact Molly Reingruber, Director of Children's Ministries at mollyr@stphilipsdurham.org or 919-682-5708.

http://fondwa.org/). Help raise awareness and money for Haiti. Free admission and free soda and popcorn; donations for St. Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children requested (www.cmmh.org). Discussion to follow the films. St. Philip's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 403 E. Main St., Durham, NC (682.5708)

Before the earthquake, Justin Brandon and two other graduates of Notre Dame spent five weeks filming in Haiti with this goal in mind: "to give people in the audience the opportunity to travel to Haiti without actually going there." One premise of the film is that the international community devalues Haiti.  The filmmakers chose to take a close look at a village called Fondwa, high in the mountains southwest of Port au Prince, and to tell its story. A story of people who opened their own bank to help neighbors fund businesses and learn to manage money. People who started a health clinic for themselves and who founded a university----the University of Fondwa.  It struggles, but it is the first university in Haiti to teach in Creole, the French-African language spoken by 95% of the populace.  The soundtrack of the 37 minute film features Haitian bands, including the only one ever nominated for a Grammy, Boukman Eksperyans.
