Greetings!
Welcome to STEP INTO YOUR LIFE! It is my way of sharing with you the personal experiences and information I gather on my journey of life. I believe that anything is possible as long as you believe in it, work for it, and stay focused on the goals to achieve it.
Feel free to share this newsletter with anyone, to email me with comments or to write a little inspiring thought of your own. I'd be happy to include it in future newsletters!
This month I am exploring the idea that who we are BEING is a reflection of all that we DO. Enjoy,
Monica

Doing VS Being
You've heard the phrase, "You are what you eat." All those choices you make of what to put in your mouth add up to the calories that shape your body. How about turning it around and saying, "You ARE what you DO." All those choices you make of what to do with your time and energy, how you respond to conflict or challenges, what priorities show up most in your life, all add up to the person you are spending your life BEING.
This is not about time management; it's about taking control of your choices. Are you steering your course on the waves of your life or are you being buffeted by outer and inner forces; without direction, goals, confidence, compassion and enthusiasm for yourself? Do you make conscious decisions based on a focused goal, or are you living your life in a rut of habits and doing what is easy? Have you given up on your life's dream or personal fulfillment? What has that cost you?
Think of all the hats you wear in your life; wife or husband, parent, entrepreneur, accountant, teacher, soccer coach, volunteer, CEO, student, etc. Is that who you ARE? Or are you something more? Who are you BEING?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate yourself in these areas? 1= not at all, 10= all the time. I know what I want. I honor my values (do what always feels right). I have turned my dreams into goals. I take risks and go after what I want. I like who I am. I do what I say I will do.
If you're not happy with the answers, then take the challenge to find out why. First you need to decide WHO you WANT to BE! Once you have decided Who you want to BE, then you can more easily figure out what that person does, what choices are made, how to respond in different situations, what are your new priorities for time, money and energy. What old stories do you have to shut out of your mind to make room for the new way of thinking? Working with a life coach can help you find a strong, inspiring inner voice who guides you to the life you want to be living.
Take a few minutes out of your day and write an answer to the following questions: What are you Doing that doesn't represent the person you want to BE? What CAN you be Doing that would get you closer to that person?
Pick 5 things you can start doing right now! Choose to do things that stand for who you want to be! Turn off the TV and go to bed at a good hour. Read a book. Have a homemade family meal complete with conversation. Purge your mail so it doesn't pile up. Take the time to explore nature, exercise, and breath fresh air. Complete things before you start anything new. Have quality conversations and spend quality time with the ones you love. Listen to your inner voice by meditating or journaling every day. Take time for YOU!
You might notice I haven't mentioned anything about career or work. That's because it starts at home with YOU. Write your own story of "who you are" by Doing and Being something new. Then move, when you are ready, to the next level in your whole life's arena with a strong core, having built strong habits for your "Self" first.
What is on your "Want to Do" and "Want to Be" list? ONLY YOU CAN DO IT! And then you can BE it too.
Change what you do and it will change who you are being. Change who you are being and it will change your life. Monica Leggett, CPCC

Suggested viewing and reading:
Movie: Peaceful Warrior (2006) A young gymnast (Scott Mechlowicz), is struggling to make sense of his life in which he is successful but still unfulfilled on his journey towards the Olympic Gold. By chance he meets his "Yoda"/Shaolin priest/Boss (Nick Nolte) who helps him get his head straight and look from within for insights. Based on a true story, Dan successfully negotiates his transformation to wise young Grasshopper (Think Kung Fu with David Carradine). This is almost a "Rocky" or "Karate Kid"-type movie with a wonderful happy ending. (Thanks Caroline, for the suggestion.)
Book: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey Great insights into great habits. How many do you have already? How many can you form over the next year?
