Hopeful Times: Spring 2011

From the desk of the Executive Director: Most of you will already have received Hope Haven's 2010 Annual Report by the time you read this newsletter. I love to recap on the year simply because there are so many positive accomplishments to focus on rather than the ongoing news of a depressed economy. One of the highlights early this year was receiving the great news that the National Children's Alliance (NCA) has approved Hope Haven's application to be re-accredited with no reservations. I am extremely proud of our Multidisciplinary Team for their exemplary work. This is exciting news for our community because national accreditation affirms our community's effort in handling child abuse cases using best practice standards. The important work of Hope Haven continues and our community and supporters have not lost sight on the importance of caring for child abuse victims and adult victims of sexual violence. We invite you to join us in celebrating successes and supporting Hope Haven in our efforts to ensure that each child and adult victim receive professional support and help so that healing can occur.

V-Day

TVM
Hope Haven and CODA were each the proud beneficiaries of more than $1,000 after three productions of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" in Beaufort in March. "The Vagina Monologues" is part of a global movement called V-Day aimed at raising awareness and funds to end violence against women and girls. The 19 member cast included two staff members, Jeanne Newland and Christine Smith, and two of our dedicated volunteers, Toye Hickman and Jane Sandler.

Hope Haven Visits State Penitentiary

Jeanne Newland, Hope Haven's Director of Prevention and Outreach, recently accompanied two brave survivors of sexual violence to speak with a group of inmates participating in a Victim Impact Group. During two meetings, the survivors courageously told their stories to the classroom full of inmates who are all to be released from the prison in Ridgeland either this year or next year. According to prison employees some of the participants were in prison for sexual offenses, though not all of them.  The prisoners were not permitted to ask questions of the survivors, but were allowed to ask Jeanne questions.  At the end of one of the classes, and inmate told the group that he had been in prison for 40 years for rape and that he wanted to apologize to the women in the room.

April is Sexual  Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month

It is not by accident that Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention month are observed in April. Nationally, 67 percent of all reported sexual assaults occur to children ages 17 and under. 76 percent of the clients Hope Haven serve are children 17 and under. The largest population, 54 percent, are children 11 and under. The median age we serve at Hope Haven is eight years old.

Proclamations were read in Beaufort County, Beaufort City, Bluffton and Hilton Head to raise awareness. Hope Haven also participated in Kids Fest and Cherish Every Child, annual events in Beaufort and Hampton to observe Child Abuse Prevention month. Hope Haven joined hands with the Marine Corp Air Station to organize an event called Spoken Awareness which involves youth and adults using art, poetry, music and dance to increase awareness about sexual violence.
