Men Of Strength Club (MOST) - Young men speak out about violence prevention
What did you learn from the MOST Club? "Not to turn situations into violence or use violence to solve problems." "Now that I'm in the MOST Club, if I'm with a girl, I'm with that one girl. I used to play; now I'm just with one girl." What does it mean to be a man of strength? "To me it means to be somebody that stands up for your ideas, to have honor and pride and know what to do and what not to at any given time in any situation. Not to be a stereotype and try to be a strong person, a person that never cries. It's not about how strong you are or how many girls you get, it's about how you live your life, and the choices you make during that lifetime."

Hope Haven partners with Duke University
Hope Haven has been selected as one of two Children's Advocacy Centers in South Carolina to partner with Duke University to implement and disseminate an evidence-based behavioral and parent training intervention called Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Developed by Dr. Sheila Eyberg, PCIT is focused on restructuring interaction patterns between parents and children in order to strengthen the bonds between them. The program aids parents in identifying alternative and more appropriate discipline strategies. PCIT leads to improved parenting skills, a decrease in child behavior problems and more positive parent-child relationships. All of these benefits help to mitigate the risk factors associated with child maltreatment and have been shown to reduce the repetition of child abuse by parents who have been violent in the past. The partnership project, "Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) of the Carolinas", is funded by the Duke Endowment to aid advocacy centers in developing effective PCIT services for children, parents, and caregivers who are at risk for child abuse and neglect.

Thank You, Bargain Box
2009/2010 was a difficult year for most non-profits as budget cuts continued in the face of increasing demands for services. The bright light in the midst of all this is a local thrift store, Bargain Box, that continues to distribute funds to local non-profits even in these trying times. Hope Haven is grateful for the unwavering support of Bargain Box in ensuring that critical services to abused children and adult rape victims continues to be made available in our community. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and the clients of Hope Haven, we extend our deepest appreciation to the wonderful volunteers and board members at Bargain Box. We also ask Hope Haven supporters to shop at Bargain Box so that its important work can continue. You will find wonderful treasures there, save money and help local non-profits all at the same time. There is certainly no better way to shop!

New grant to help local youth create powerful message against violence
Hope Haven was recently awarded $15,000 by the Ms Foundation for Women to support a collaborative project with LOUD (Living Out Ur Dreams). The project is designed to engage and empower youth to address the issue of interpersonal violence, including sexual and domestic violence, in their community. Teens participating in LOUD will study the underlying causes of violence and learn about various media formats to make their positive messages known. By learning how to create, produce and edit short film public service announcements and how to distribute their work through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, the teen participants will gain valuable skills while helping our community. The messages created will heighten community awareness of this critical issue and empower local teenagers to effect positive social change.

A message from this year's honoree
This past May I was honored as the 'woman of the year' award at the annual Lilies on the River luncheon. I was humbled and overwhelmed by being chosen the recipient of this prestigious award. I was touched by the number of friends who attended the luncheon as my "circle of friends" and the thoughtful accolades by board members and friends alike. This unique, beautifully orchestrated fundraiser is a way to support and be with friends for such a worthy cause.

In the six years that I have served on the board of Hope Haven of the Lowcountry, my passion and dedication to this unique and necessary organization has never waned. I continue to want to raise funds, educate the public and be a spokesperson for Hope Haven, whose needs become greater each year. Their story is a story of providing hope back into lives shattered by child abuse and sexual assault. I want to recognize and thank all of our sponsors, the dedicated board and the selfless volunteers that made the event possible. I also want to extend my gratitude to all who attended the luncheon and purchased lilies to honor and memorialize the women who have touched their lives. And, most of all, I want to encourage the Lowcountry community to become more aware of the mission of Hope Haven, the only children's advocacy and rape crises center that serves five counties whose needs continue to grow.
With deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude, Gloria Daly Board Member
