2012 Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year - Anthony Quach, of Tigard High School has been selected as the 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Youth Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of former Mayor Jim Nicoli.   Anthony has been actively involved in giving back to both school and the Tigard community across a range of activities assisting other students, food drives, fund raising and more.  Read more...

 

2012 Tigard Chamber Business of the Year - Grocery Outlet King City  

Grocery Outlet of King City, owned by Tony and Tina Slyter since 2008 has been selected as the 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Chamber Business of the Year.  Tony and Tina also own the recently opened Newberg Grocery Outlet.  The Chamber Business of the Year Award is made to a Tigard Chamber business who has made in-depth contributions to the Tigard community through their business. The winner is active, involved, interested, and enthusiastic about continuing to make Tigard a destination of choice for local business.

 

Tony and Tina with their Grocery Outlet stores are active in supporting numerous organizations/causes within the Tigard Community including King City Lions Club, Tigard High Boosters, Tigard High athletics, arts, drama and the band, Youth Transition Group, Operation Christmas Glory, The Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools, the Save the Pools Drive, Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent De Paul and Tigard Covenant Church Food Pantries.  Stretching a little farther afield they have supported both the Oregon Food Bank and Vernonia Flood victims.   Read more about how their contributions have impacted the community of Tigard.

 

2012 Tigard's First Citizen - Jim Strickler

Jim Strickler, Vice President of Logistics at Blue Bird Transfer, has been selected as Tigard's First Citizen. This award is given to an individual whohas made in-depth, long-term volunteer contributions to the Tigard community over the years. The winner is active, involved, interested, and enthusiastic about making Tigard a nice place to live and work. This individual excels in any area of unpaid endeavor of education, social services, youth work, and community improvement of public services. This award is given in the spirit of all volunteers who remain unknown. Jim joins the ranks of those previously honored in continually striving to improve the Tigard Area.

 

Jim Strickler exemplifies these characteristics by his active involvement in the Tigard Community across a broad range of social service, non-profit, and community activities. Over the last decade, Jim has been actively involved in multiple facets of our community ranging from business activities and fundraising, to pastoral services and service on the board of a non-profit organization that supports families in need. He has been actively involved with the Tigard Chamber, Good Neighbor Center, Rotary Club of Tigard, Westside Chapel, and Young's Funeral Home.  Read more about Jim's involvement in the Tigard Community

 

Tigard Exemplary Citizens - The Tigard City Council selected Mary S. Feller as the recipient of the 2012 Exemplary Citizen Award and will recognize Reverend Michael D. Ruptak for his Exemplary Service to the Community. These awards recognize the positive contributions these citizens have made to the city and its neighborhoods over the past year....

Awards will be presented at the 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration being held Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m.  With a theme of Escape to a Night in the Caribbean, this fun, casual event will be a blast!  For more info or to purchase tickets, click here.

Seminars take place at McCormick's Fish House & Bar from 11:30 am - 1:15 pm on the second Tuesday of every month. Lunch will be served at noon.

Tigard Public Library Will Host Money Management Workshops

 

            Tigard Public Library will host a series of money management workshops throughout April aimed at improving financial skills for those who are just beginning to handle their personal finances. The Library is teaming up with Operation HOPE and Financial Beginnings, two non-profit organizations that offer financial education programs for students and young adults to help them plan their futures.

            The three workshops will cover managing money, establishing an effective savings plan and understanding credit. The workshops are scheduled on the following Wednesdays from 3-4:30 p.m.:

• April 4-Budgeting and Investing
• April 18-Banking
• April 25-Credit

            Participants may sign up for any or all of the workshops. Space at each workshop is limited to 20 and registration is required. They are free and will be held in the Library's second floor Conference Room. For more information about the weekly topics for each workshop and to register, stop by the Library or call the Reference Desk at 503-718-2517.

Mask & Mirror @ The Tigard Library 

The Mask & Mirror Community Theatre troupe will present a play-reading program at the Tigard Public Library on Wednesday, April 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Actors will read scenes from plays that the troupe is considering performing in its next season.

Members of the troupe will also invite some audience volunteers to read in character with them. Without costumes or scenery, the actors and audience can focus on how dialogue and direction work together to enhance a play.
