Opt In - Portland Metro

Metro, the regional government that oversees transportation, natural areas, urban growth and development in the greater Portland area has developed a new tool called Opt In to hear the opinions of more local residents. Opt In is an online public opinion panel that asks participants to complete 1 or 2 short surveys each month on topics of regional concern. Opt In was launched a year ago and more than 8,000 people have signed up so far. However, most of these members live in Portland and Multnomah County. Washington County is very under-represented. Metro wants to hear from a broader range of opinions and viewpoints to help make our region a great place to live. Visit www.optinpanel.org to learn more and join."

Tigard Community Backpack Program

The Tigard Police Department has teamed up with the local school district and other key social service organizations to help provide underserved children in Tigard with food. The Tigard Community Backpack Program provides basic food to children (kindergarten to 5th grade) who might not otherwise have access to food over the weekend.

Food is delivered or donated to participating elementary schools. In-turn, volunteers then fill backpacks full of food for children to take home on Fridays. The empty backpack is returned to the school on Monday. Many children rely on their schools for their primary meals during the school week. Many times the children's home does not have sufficient food at hand on weekends. Metzger Elementary School has successfully implemented the program for about two years. Recently, Durham, Templeton and C.F. Tigard Elementary Schools have signed-on. As you might imagine, managing such programs requires considerable resources.

In the efforts to maintain the program, Tigard Police would like to ask the community for help. For us to continue to serve children, we need the support of churches, community and service organizations, businesses and individuals. Here's how...

Donate at Tigard City Hall, Templeton, C.F. Tigard or Durham Elementary Schools.

Most in-demand items:

  • Oatmeal (individual packets are best)
  • Breakfast bars, cereal
  • Healthy snacks
  • Canned beef, chicken or tuna
  • Small plastic jars of peanut butter and jelly
  • Crackers
  • Individual applesauce or fruit cups
  • Small bags of rice or beans
  • Boxes of chicken or tuna helper
  • Small cans of soups or stews
  • Small containers of mayonnaise
  • Macaroni and cheese (box or cups)
  • Small cans of prepared pasta meals (i.e. Spaghetti-o's, etc)
Please, no glass containers, expired or nearly-expired foods; they cannot be used. Also consider the size and weight or the packaging. Large boxes do not fit in backpacks and heavy containers are difficult for small children to carry.

Don't have time to drop off food? Consider a tax-deductible donation to the Tigard Youth Association, a 501(c) 3 organization. Mail your check, payable to Tigard Youth Association, to P.O. Box 230865, Tigard, OR 97081. For more information please contact the Tigard Police Youth Services at 503-718-2578.

Northwest Sarcoma Foundation

About Northwest Sarcoma Foundation:

NWSF is a non-profit organization providing support, education/awareness and research.  Sarcoma is a cancer of the connective tissues, such as nerves, muscles, cartilage, joints, bones, or blood vessels.  It accounts for approximately 1% of all adult cancers and 15% of childhood cancers. Approximately 12,000 people in the US are diagnosed each year-half of whom are children-and nearly 6,000 people die each year from this dreaded disease.  In the Pacific Northwest alone we expect another 400 people to be diagnosed this year.  And research funding for sarcoma is minuscule by comparison to better known cancer such as leukemia or melanoma.

This will be our 4th Annual Portland Dragonslayer Hike/Bike/Trike event benefiting Northwest Sarcoma Foundation. This event raises awareness of and support for sarcoma patients and their families, and honors those who have battled sarcoma.  It will be held on September 29th, 2012.  Registration opens at 9 am and the walk begins at 10 am.  We will have music, an MC, a kids tent with face painting and bike decorating and a raffle. We will walk around Cook Park, over the bridge to Tualatin Park, then back around to Cook Park.
