Greetings!
In late October I had the opportunity to attend the annual Oregon State Chamber Conference. This allows me to connect and network with other chamber CEO's around Oregon and share challenges, ideas and solutions. Additionally, we get great professional development in break out sessions and speakers that address key challenges chambers are facing.
One resounding theme at this year's conference as well as last year's, is that businesses expect their chambers to be involved in economic development and helping build a strong local economy. We had a presentation on Economic Gardening and the opportunities associated with that, presented by the Tualatin Chamber. In Oregon, more than most other states where unemployment continues to be in the high 9%, helping build a strong business base will be what helps us pull out of this recession.
For all these reasons, Building a Strong Local Economy has been one of our key focus areas over the last year and will continue to be a key focus. This has fostered initiatives such as Lunch Local spearheaded by one of our board members, Steve Schmitt with Berry Insurance. It is also the compelling reason we partnered with the Tualatin Chamber to have a business expo for our chamber members focused on the benefits of shopping local and strengthening the local economy. Our member to member discount programs foster this as well, encouraging patronage of member businesses.
We will continue to be looking for ways to help build a strong local economy in Tigard and work effectively with other organizations to create a climate that enables business success. Want to understand what shopping local can do in our local economy? Read this article and share it Why Shop Local? As we head into the holiday and shopping season, please keep this in mind.
Thanks,
Debi

Get your news out with the Oregonian and Oregonlive.com
The Oregonian recently relaunched the paper's daily and Sunday Business sections, with a different look and a number of new features. A key change is the expansion of our Industry Notes, People on the Move and Calendar listings -- an expansion that provides significantly more opportunity for Portland area businesses and businesspeople to list their milestones and events in our pages. This is news, not advertising. So there's no charge. If you have news you would like included in these business-oriented listings, please let us know at business@oregonian.com. We are particularly interested in new executive hires, real estate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, free public events, industry awards and business expansions. Please help us get the word out by sharing this opportunity at your networking and social events, or if you have an email or printed newsletter. When in doubt, tell them to send it all our way. It helps, too, if you include 'Industry Notes' or 'People on the Move' or 'Calendar' in the subject line of the e-mail.
Additionally, businesses can post press releases or other information directly to our website at http://blog.oregonlive.com/business-watch. It's a simple cut-and-paste process after the businessperson clicks on "write your post now." But they can feel free to contact us if they have questions, also.

Lunch and Learn Presenters Needed
We are working to bring you a monthly calendar of lunch and learns from noon-1 p.m. I am looking for businesses/people interested in presenting a lunch and learn topic that has broad interest to chamber and local businesses. We will do multiple lunch and learns/month depending on presenter interest/availability and other chamber events schedules.
There is no fee for presenting & use of Pearson room. Presenters get to interact with 20-30 local businesses, spend 30-40 minutes or so on their topic and get 5-10 minutes to present their value proposition as a business. Sponsors may provide a light lunch if they desire (could increase attendance) or it becomes BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch).
Interested in sponsoring/presenting a lunch and learn?

GOV'T & PUBLIC POLICY (GAPP)
|
|
Your GAPP committee met this morning with Representative Margaret Doherty to hear an update from her on the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange. This independent exchange is expected to help combat the rising cost of health insurance by enabling individuals and small businesses to have access to health coverage at more competitive rates through pooling of applicant policies. The business plan is currently in development and we expect more details to come out of the Feb 2012 Legislative session regarding this major initiative. Stay tuned for more info.
Chamber Day at the Oregon State Capitol is planned for Feb 16th at 8:00 a.m. at the Salem Conference Center. Interested Chamber members are welcome to attend with GAPP committee members. More details to following including cost, agenda and speakers. Stay tuned.
We will be partnering with all Washington County Chambers as part of our WCCCP partnership to bring you a 1st Congressional District Forum with the final candidates in early January 2012. This will be a 7:30 a.m. forum. Dates and location are still being firmed. Stay tuned. Attendance at this event will be limited to chamber member businesses from Washington County chambers.
