TWO IMPORTANT FEDERAL LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS
The Senate HELP Committee last week invited stakeholder groups to comment on the
Workforce Investment Act Draft that has been over two years in the making and is headed this month toward Senate mark-up. Following formal submission procedures, CAAL's comments and suggestions were given as a document attached to a letter to HELP Committee Senators Murray, Enzi, Isakson, and Harkin. A copy is available at the CAAL website at www.caalusa.org/Senate.pdf. Many other national workforce and adult education organizations also submitted comments. They include the National Coalition for Literacy (www.national-coalition-literacy.org), CLASP (www.clasp.org), the National Skills Coalition (www.nationalskillscoalition.org), and the National Council of State Directors of Adult Education (www.ncsdae.org).
On Thursday, June 16, 2011, Congressman Ruben Hinojosa (TX) reintroduced the Adult Education and Economic Growth Act of 2011, which will be available with a new HR number this week at www.thomas.gov. Many co-sponsors joined in the submission and others are expected to sign on. The bill has been strengthened in important ways over the original AEEGA of 2009.
