In The News
Dawson breaks career passing record

M.L. King quarterback Jonquel Dawson became DeKalb County's all-time leader in career passing yardage in the Lions' 25-17 victory against Harrison in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs last week.

Dawson passed for 298 yards against the Hoyas to increase his career total to 4,856 yards. The previous record of 4,614 yards was set by Peachtree's Todd Rampley (1981-1983).

Dawson, a junior, has completed 302 of 599 passes in 32 career games, with 48 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He also broke the county records this year for passing yards in a season (3,084) and TD passes in a season (35). He is second in completions in a season with 171, trailing only Southwest DeKalb's Eric Jones, who had 203 in 1983.

Cedar Grove quarterback Johnathon McCrary is not far behind Dawson. His 262 yards in the Saints' 30-24 victory against Cartersville in the first round of the playoffs gave him 2,866 for the season, just 218 behind Dawson.

Also in the Harrison game, Lions receiver Demarco Robinson broke the county record for receiving yards in a season. Robinson had seven catches for 153 yards, giving him a season total of 1,408 yards, breaking the record of 1,326 set by Lakeside's Dick Conn in 1968.

Robinson's 22 touchdown receptions this season also are a county record, and his 63 receptions rank third behind Southwest DeKalb's Steve Davenport (79 in 1984 and 73 in 1983).
