Weekend Preview: GHSF Daily's 10 Best |
Elbert County at North Oconee
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Titans Field, Bogart
Records, rankings: Elbert County 7-1 overall, 5-0 in Region 8-AA South and unranked; North Oconee is 8-0, 5-0 and No. 7.
Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. The winner of this game will be the Region 8-AA South champion and face the North champion next week for the region title. 2. North Oconee RB/DB Lane Thompson scored all four of his team's touchdowns, one on a kickoff return, in a 28-0 victory over Oglethorpe County last week, while Elbert County's Valdon Cooper rushed for 120 yards and ran a kickoff for a touchdown in a 20-0 victory over East Jackson. 3. Sid Fritts, in his first season as Elbert County's coach, is trying to win region titles at three different schools in 10 years. He won four at Vidalia (2001-04) and two at Rome (2005-06).
Grayson at Brookwood When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Brookwood Community Stadium, Snellville
Records, rankings: Grayson is 6-2 overall, 5-1 in Region 8-AAAAA and unranked; Brookwood is 7-1, 5-1 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Grayson won 22-12 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. Grayson's 24-22 loss to South Gwinnett ended the Rams' four-game winning streak against the Comets and their 23-game winning streak in Region 8-AAAAA. 2. Brookwood held Parkview to less than 150 yards of total offense in its 10-3 victory last week. It was the Broncos' fifth win in the last six meetings in the series against their biggest rivals. 3. Brookwood, Grayson and South Gwinnett each have one loss in 8-AAAAA. Brookwood will win the region title if it beats Grayson and Berkmar. Grayson must win its remaining two games and hope for an Archer upset of South Gwinnett to repeat as region champion.
Jefferson County at Dublin
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Shamrock Bowl, Dublin
Records, rankings: Jefferson County is 6-1-1 overall, 5-1 in Region 3-AA and unranked; Dublin is 7-1, 5-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Jefferson County won 17-10 in 2009.
Three things to know:1. The winner of this game likely will become the No. 2 seed in 3-AA for the state playoffs behind Swainsboro (8-0), which beat Dublin 7-3 and Jefferson County 38-37. 2. Dublin runs a Wing-T offense and hasn't passed well this season, completing only 30 of 109 attempts, but is rushing for more than 250 yards a game. RB Maurice Martin has rushed for 790 yards on 71 carries (11.1 yards per carry) with 11 touchdowns. Another top back, Cedric O'Neal, did not play last week because of injury. 3. Jefferson County has two outstanding running backs in Charles Broadus (889 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Dontavious Kitchens (800 yards, 12 touchdowns). Broadus has three kick-return touchdowns.
Lovejoy at Creekside When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Arrowhead Stadium, Fairburn
Records, rankings: Lovejoy is 8-0 overall, 8-0 in Region 4-AAAA and No. 10; Creekside is 8-0, 8-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Lovejoy won 15-14 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. Creekside unexpectedly finds itself tied with Lovejoy for first place in the region at 8-0. The Seminoles lost to Mount Zion of Jonesboro 21-19 on Sept. 17, but that loss was overturned when Mount Zion had to forfeit five games for using an ineligible player. 2. Lovejoy has outscored its opponents 243-83 (an average of 30-10) this season. The Wildcats have 31 sacks for 188 yards in losses, plus another 54 tackles for loss for 134 yards. 3. Lovejoy, Creekside, North Clayton and Tri-Cities have clinched playoff berths in 4-AAAA. Lovejoy would secure the region championship with a victory on Friday; Creekside would still need to win at North Clayton next week to be assured of the title.
Marion County at Brookstone
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Rex Knight Stadium, Columbus
Records, rankings: Marion County is 8-0 overall, 8-0 in Region 4-A and No. 10; Brookstone is 7-1, 7-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Brookstone won 21-12 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. Marion County will win Region 4-A with a victory. It would be the school's first region title, counting its years since 1976 as Tri-County. 2. Marion County blocked an extra-point attempt in its 7-6 victory last week over Greenville, the defending region champion. 3. Brookstone's Drew McCluskey and Brewton McCluskey are key players on both sides of the ball. Drew is a junior safety, Brewton a senior linebacker, and both have had rushing games of more than 100 yards.
Marist at Mays When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, Lakewood Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Both teams are 6-2 overall, 6-2 in Region 6-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: Mays won 23-17 in overtime in 2007.
Three things to know: 1. Marist's offense, which had scored just six total points the previous two weeks in an overtime victory against Lakeside and a loss to Dunwoody, came back to life last week in a 34-12 victory against Lithonia. 2. Mays also had struggled the previous two weeks, losing to Tucker and Carver-Atlanta, but the Raiders rebounded with a 42-0 victory against Douglass. 3. Mays has clinched a playoff berth, and Marist needs one more victory to reach the postseason. Either team could finish as the No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAA.
Savannah Country Day at Calvary Day
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, M.C. Anderson Field, Savannah
Records, rankings: Both teams are 6-2 overall, 3-1 in Region 3-A East and unranked.
Last meeting: Savannah Country Day won 31-13 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. Calvary Day, which upset previously unbeaten and No. 3 Savannah Christian 6-0 last week, can win Region 3-A East with a victory. But a loss could drop the Cavaliers to fourth place in the East and force a must-win scenario next week against West champion Johnson County in the region play-in games. 2. A victory by Savannah Country Day probably would give the East title to Savannah Christian (7-1, 3-1) and give Country Day a No. 2 seed for the region play-in games. 3. Country Day WR Kevin Blackburne, a GHSF Daily preseason all-state player, caught eight passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-28 victory over Metter last week.
Stephenson at Newnan When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Drake Stadium, Newnan
Records, rankings: Stephenson is 8-0 overall, 5-0 in Region 2-AAAAA and No. 4; Newnan is 5-3, 4-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Stephenson won 6-0 in 2004 in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.
Three things to know: 1. Stephenson's Mike Davis (120 yards) and Willie Davis (110) each topped 100 yards rushing for the fourth consecutive game in the Jaguars' 30-19 victory against East Coweta last week. 2. Newnan trailed M.L. King 21-0 in the first quarter last week but rallied to tie the game with two minutes remaining and then won in overtime 35-34. M.L. King scored a touchdown in overtime but missed the extra point. 3. Stephenson, Newnan, East Coweta and M.L. King have clinched playoff berths from 2-AAAAA, and the winner of this game can claim the region championship by winning again next week.
Thomasville at Cook
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Cook Memorial Stadium, Adel
Records, rankings: Thomasville is 6-2 overall, 3-1 in Region 1-AA and No. 9; Cook is 8-0, 4-0 and No. 4.
Last meeting: Thomasville won 17-0 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1.The winner likely will be the No. 1 seed from this region in the state playoffs. Cook can clinch the region title with a victory. Thomasville will get the No. 1 seed if it beats Cook and ends up in a three-way tie for first place with Cook and Fitzgerald. The tiebreaker would be overall record against Class AA opponents, and Thomasville would lead. 2. Thomasville has won 16 of the past 17 games in the series. 3. The star players in this game are Cook LB/RB Shannon Brown, who has committed to Alabama, and Thomasville's Jeffery Dyson, a speedy two-way starter at quarterback and defensive back.
Westminster at Lovett When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium/Conley-Oakley Field, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Westminster is 6-2 overall, 4-0 in Region 6-AA Division B and No. 6; Lovett is 6-2, 4-0 and No. 10.
Last meeting: Westminster won 21-6 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. The winner of this game claims the subregion title and a state playoff berth and will meet Buford on Nov. 5 in the Region 6-AA championship game. The loser likely meets Decatur in a region play-in game for a shot at the state playoffs. 2. Lovett quarterback Hunter Budd has passed for 1,118 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 259 yards and 11 touchdowns. Zach Boden is the team leader in rushing yardage (587) and receptions (20). 3. Last year's meeting between the schools was moved from Lovett to Woodward Academy because Lovett's athletic facilities were flooded. Westminster's Ralph D. Abernathy rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the Wildcats' victory. |

Corrections |
We got lots of good feedback on our story Wednesday on helmets that use college and NFL logos.
Readers let us know that Dunwoody no longer uses the cat's paw logo and Troup no longer uses the tiger stripes of the NFL Bengals. Both were changed this season by new head coaches, and the information had not been passed along to the Georgia Helmet Project site.
We should've included Charlton County as a school that uses Florida State's arrow design and Grayson as a school that uses the rams horns of the St. Louis Rams or the Colorado State Rams.
Crisp County, we've been told, has returned to a paw print on its helmet and away from the Chicago Bears' C shape. Berkmar no longer wears the New England Patriots' logo and has gone to a diamond-shaped design made popular by Furman.
We didn't include helmets that use the Furman diamond shape in our original story because Furman uses the letter F in the diamond, and no Georgia school uses that letter. In addition to Berkmar, Georgia schools that use the Furman diamond on their helmets, according to the Helmet Project, are Calvary Day, Eastside, Glascock County, Harlem, Jefferson, Lincoln County, Macon County, Peach County, Peachtree Ridge, Sandy Creek, Thomasville, Villa Rica and Walton (above).
